September 25, 2022 at 4:50 pm I have a pair of 2004 Cummins 6BTA engines in my boat. Recently started having problem with starboard side tachometer not working. Checked ground lugs on motor and pulled new tach drive out and re-installed. Tachometer then would bounce up and down with no accuracy. Also noticed the starboard volt meter next to tach bouncing. Starboard motor will idle perfect but tach moves up and down with no accuracy. It will idle like this for as long as I le…

September 20, 2022 at 3:08 pm Ā  Ā I have twin Cummins motors 6bta5.9 on a 38 Mediterranean boat.Ā  About 30 minute after filling the tank with 400 gallons of fuel cruising at 2000rpm we noticed black smoke from the exhaust of 1 motor as well as the water temp increased to about 190 deg.Ā  We stopped the boat checked the sea strainer and emptied out very little debris, along with that I removed the intake filter from the turbo to see if it was a air problem. September 20, 2022 at 4:58 am Hi. The mechanical B/CĀ  wiring diagram in Tony’s Tips doesn’t include the magnetic tach sender wiring. I’ve got cable-driven tachs on the 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 I’m doing a complete refit on, but I recently installed throttle cables in preparation for splashing the boat next month (first time since the PO hauled the boat and left it in Purgatory Row back in 1985!). September 16, 2022 at 8:16 am I have an older Cummins 6BTA5.9 CPL 1928, ESN 45129316 with the Nippon Denso Injector pump. The throttle cable has always been pretty tight (i.e. hard/harder to move) than I felt it should, so, I decided to do a little investigation and replace what I thought would be a Teleflex/Seastar cable that was bad.Ā  I was fairly sure the culprit was going to be the cable from the upper helm (fly bridge) to the lower helm since it was the longer cable and…

Best to take it apart, lube all, figure out how it works and then you can decide where the issue is.. It’s just about always related to linkage rust, an old cable/binding, etc.Ā  Ā Nothing scary when working on it.

Once the OP rises to above 8-10 PSI, the alarm goes away.Ā  The largerĀ  “other one”, is the sender for the oil pressure gauge.

September 16, 2022 at 11:22 am Hi, Another question within this thread just to keep the topic were it belongs. When sealing the oil pan to the block without the paper gasket and only using Ultra Black RTV: Is there any concern on using rtv around the oil pickup port hole on the pan/to block? Oil pan is the aluminum type (3348911) where the pickup tube bolts to the pan and then the pan bolts and aligns the oil port hole to the block.Ā  Thank you
