I have a pair of 2004 Cummins 6BTA engines in my boat. Recently started having problem with starboard side tachometer not working. Checked ground lugs on motor and pulled new tach drive out and re-installed. Tachometer then would bounce up and down with no accuracy. Also noticed the starboard volt meter next to tach bouncing. Starboard motor will idle perfect but tach moves up and down with no accuracy. It will idle like this for as long as I leave motor idle.I then start my port motor which that tach works properly, after port motor runs for 3-5 seconds starboard tach drops to zero and volt meter on starboard side stops bouncing. I shut port motor off and Starboard tach will then read again with no accuracy. Any advice as to what could be causing this problem? Possible something in battery switches or charging system causing what I am thinking is some type of voltage isolation problem.Ā <br />Thank You

Sounds like your tach is alternator driven. Get your alternator repairedĀ
