    Questions

Is the oil pan front drain plug/magnet removal going to take a considerable amount of oooomph?

Think a 1/2″ hand rachet with a 3/8’s male suffice or will I need something more like a short breaker bar?

    Thanks

Thanks for the replies gentlemen !

The QSB 5.9 in my boat has a Wolverine oil pan heater pad plugged in 24/7 when the boat is in the water.

The engine also has a factory drain hose on the bottom aft of the oil pan. My engine install is about dead flat level at the dock. Very little oil came out of the front magnet plug as expected.Ā Ā

I have used a Jabsco Water puppy with neoprene impeller for years pumping oil.

Makes a real quick pump out of 14-15 qts of oil and you’ll be hard pressed to hole the hose of the oil coming out with the oil pan heater.

I’ll post up some pictures next time aroundĀ

    Gene,

This is the value of the forum as I see it.Ā  We can discuss things and make points and counter points and arrive at an ideal process or conclusion.Ā  Thank you for reading my procedure and commenting.Ā  This allows anyone else that reads all of this to weigh the options and determine what works for them.

Sea Ray did me no favors by leaving very little clearance between the top of the engine and the underside of the cockpit floor as well as the contortions I must suffer to access the Trans DipStick.Ā  Shoe-horned V-Drives.Ā  I could use a flexible tube and funnel to fill the oil from the top but with my lack of dexterity I fear that I would make a huge mess.Ā  So for me it I will live with whatever old oil is left in the tube.Ā  It does get diluted by a few gallons of the good stuff…..Ā

    Cheers!

For anyone that will be doing their own lube change and have a Reverso, I have attached one manā€™s idea of a procedure.

    Very detailed.

I have two differences from your procedure.

First, I do not run the engine immediately before the change. I want as much old oil as possible to be down in the pan. I think the standard argument is that running the engine stirs up the sludge in the pan, but it also leaves some of that sludgy oil in the engine. Running the engine warms the oil for possibly better extraction, but that depends on your location and weather. When I changed mine a week ago the engine room temperature was about 95F.

Second, I never use the pump (I have a Jabsco) to refill the oil. Why pump a line full of sludge back into the engine? Admittedly I have no problem reaching the engine fill or the transmission fill to add new oil. If those are difficult the pump might be the only practical way to refill.

I realize I am going against conventional wisdom with these points. Just another opinion.

    Bill,

Nice Job!Ā  I did my first full lube change service last year.Ā  I have a Reverso and twins.Ā  My process is different than yours so I did not respond to your initial post.Ā  I wrote a procedure for changing trans AND mains with a reverso.Ā  My engine compartment is not exactly what you would call roomy and I am tall, arthritic and inflexible.Ā  I will gladly pay for the service from now on.Ā  I did want to do it once and document it so that in a pinch I know what I am doing.Ā Ā  Did you document your process?Ā  I am sure that Forum members with similar setup would benefit from a write up of your own experience.

For anyone that will be doing their own lube change and have a Reverso, I have attached one man’s idea of a procedure.

    Cheers!

    oil/filter change done.

    The drain plug was tight.

Small breaker bar took care of the removal.
