      November 10, 2016 at 7:28 pm I put this up on boatdiesel.com but thought I’d try here too. I had my coolers serviced with an ultrasound cleaning. I was surprised to discover that every lick of paint was removed right down to bright aluminum. Do I paint the inside of the cooler housing as well as the outside to provide some barrier to the seawater exposure? If so, any paint recommendation? Also there is some pitting on the cap/housing mating surface? I was planning on …

      November 17, 2016 at 6:12 pm just found some paperwork in boat from the sale of the boat to the person I bought boat from.in 2010 on port engine a new style head with updated valves installed plus #3 cylinder and turbo charger installed.in 2011 same thing except #4 cylinder.was this a common acurrance on this engine with Cummings replacing head and valves due to valves not seating properly or perhaps something else .it was covered under Cummings warranty good will program.b…

      November 18, 2016 at 6:21 am In the Preheater post this heater diagram was uploaded by Tony.  I boxed in red what is listed as a “fuse”.  Tony or anyone, please correct me if I am wrong but that “fuse” is actually the engine mounted 10amp circuit breaker that I show in the attached picture.  For anyone not familiar with this breaker, if the connections to the base of it come loose you will shutdown, no different than shutting of the key switch.  Chec…

      November 20, 2016 at 5:08 pm Oh for sure…. sorry I didn’t make it clearer. The blower gets it’s power elsewhere, I’m only looking for switching power for the relay as you now know. I’ve struggled to find a constant 12v with the engine running, and I want to avoid going anywhere near the fuel solenoid.

      November 15, 2016 at 7:01 pm The mechanic who was previously looking after our engines disconnected the preheaters on the top of the aftercoolers and told me when I asked it was because the engines didn’t need them in our hot climate and they are not good for the alternators. Is this true or should I reconnect them? The other thing is he just disconnected them by taking the leads off the terminals at the preheaters then taped them up. It looks untidy so if they are no…

My sportfish also has a sharp entry and flat stern section (even flatter than Finest Kind) making for a very easy planning boat and a super stable platform at anchor or drift..       November 13, 2016 at 10:48 am Had alternator (delco 22si) stop putting out volts so removed and had it rebuilt. Installed it today (added new belt) and now its putting out 14.50 volts at idle. Drops to 14.35 at 1800rpm. I thought this alternator was regulated at 14.2? Is this enough voltage to damage batteries? Not a big deal and run it for awhile or pull it off again and take back to alternator shop? Engine is 535hp QSM-11 with 3,000 hrs. thanks, tom

      November 9, 2016 at 9:31 am I have 2003 QSM-11 with pretty low hours. When I first turn on the main power to the engine, then turn the key on and wait for its testing routine. I then press the start button, it start then immediately cuts out. If I leave the main power on but turn off the engine and let it sit for a week or so I’ll have the same problem. I then go to the main power for the engine, turn it off, then turn the power and the key back on, wait for the test…

      November 15, 2016 at 6:49 pm Before getting carried away, try replacing the ignition rectifier behind the helm station.  No guarantees, but a cheap part to replace known to create odd starting issues.  I had odd ignition issues on a 2006 QSB 5.9 that were solved when I replaced the rectifier and verified the connections were good.

      November 15, 2016 at 5:26 am Looking at purchasing a Sea Ray Sedan Bridge 400 with ~500 hours on Cummins 6CTA engines with ZF transmissions. What is the oil change interval recommended? Oil sample results came back high on both transmissions for Iron and Copper.  Both were about the same with Iron at 63 ppm and Copper 495ppm. Is this normal or to be expected? Signs of an issue?

      November 14, 2016 at 11:51 am While on a 14 day trip down the A-ICW we noticed a small diesel leak in the vicinity of the high pressure fuel pump.  It does not appear to be coming from any of the inlet/outlet fittings.   The engine is 6 years old and has 638hrs running time.   A single paper towel placed under the pump could absorb the amount of diesel leaking after an 8 hour run.     Does this type of leak eventually lead to a catastrophic engine failure?  Should the pump b…

      November 7, 2016 at 8:11 am repowered from one QSM 670 to new one and kept my old instrumentation, pyrometer, water flow and raw water heat alarms.  The 2 raw water alarms made the cut, the pyrometer did not.   i have power to it (lights up with ignition on) but the needle never moves past 90 degrees.   When the I nine came out the probe was removed and put to the side, no wires cut, the gauge was unplugged at the dash, clipped at the 2 12 volt leads and then reinstal…
