September 27, 2022 at 4:46 am Hello –Ā  I have a pair of 2000 6CTA on a Carver 450 with about 1400 hours (400 have been over the past 3 years since we have owned the boat). Just completed a trip from Rochester NY to Myrtle Beach. We have done a lot of work on the engines following the guidance of Tony and the community (SMX water pumps, 2 new after coolers, replaced all hoses, Double Double Fuel filtration, SMX Boost and EGT, redundant raw water alarms, new trans cooler…

October 6, 2022 at 2:00 pm Thanks Steve – I have hit all your items – I think I am going to see if I can swap my pyro sensors to see if my temps repeat and then revisitĀ  #2 on your list – go through the proper procedure one more time on confirming my RPM readings, run up in neutral and then see where I am at WOT – adjust props as needed.Ā

    • Yanmar 3JH2LTE 25hp White smoke at startup

February 28, 2022 at 4:42 pm Good day, I have Khohler 13KW generator on a boat with a pair of 6CTAā€™s. Generator has 2200 hours and produce a lot of white smoke at startup and excess diesel is visible in the water. I am certain it is not water vapor. I have tried a number of easy things and followed the service manual trouble shooting. Engine starts immediately – no knocks or shudders. Smoke continues for about 4 minutes if I put the genset under load and after 4 minut…

    • SMX Double Double with Bulb Prime

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bystevenagodfrey 2 years ago

November 23, 2021 at 8:06 am Hello – Installing the Double Double on a 6CTA 8.3. Two items I want to be sure I have correct: (1) Second filter has a washer on the threads – assume that is because that fine filter requires an extra 1/4 turn? (2) What is the best procedure for priming – is it necessary to fill the filters with clean fuel or can you tighten the filters and use the bulb primer to fill the filters / prime the engines? Thanks in advance – …

March 4, 2021 at 4:36 pm Hello – I might be over analyzing, but now I have all kinds of information on the 2000 6CTA engines after adding transmission pressure and EGT/Boost gages. This what I am seeing – the port transmission is reading 375+ PSI and the starboard engine is reading 325+. Per my research it seems that the max pressure should be 350. Port Engine EGT 875 (26 Boost) and Starboard 800 EGT (28 Boost). Are these numbers okay or do I need to inves…

    • 2000 6CTA Aftercooler Service

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 3 years ago

January 21, 2021 at 3:50 pm Hello – Performed my first aftercooler maintenance today – the aftercooler was purchased from Seaboard two years ago and the boat has been mostly in fresh water. I noticed water on the air side in the pipe coming from the turbo and upon disassembly I found the fins wet. As noted on the site the turbo side was black. Is this normal condensation from the hot turbo air or do I need to investigate the source of the water. I have sbm…

May 26, 2020 at 1:57 pm Hello – In the process of installing the SBMAR Boost pressure gauges and found an interesting difference after removing the threaded plugs from the Air Intake Manifolds. Top picture black (is port engine) and the Bottom Picture with Red Rust is the Starboard side. Both engines around 1,000 hours (year 2000). Prior to purchase (last year) the starboard aftercooler was replaced. Port aftercooler serviced last year. Any thoughts on the d…

June 16, 2020 at 6:06 pm Hello – In the process of upgrading a 2000 6CTA with the sbmar CCV vent. The new air filter is signicantly smaller – is this just a higher performance design than the older style that I removed as part of the installation? Thanks Steve

June 18, 2020 at 6:35 pm Yes, substantially smaller with with a substantially higher flow rate at the same pressure drop.. Calling it a modern more efficient filter media design would be a fair way to define it. Maybe 35 years ago, and company called K&N, put this type of filter media into the main stream.

March 19, 2020 at 4:44 pm Hello – I am in the process of installing the SBMAR EGT and Turbo Pressure sensor and have encountered an obstacle on the port engine. As shown in the first picture, the access port is lined up with the main bolts on the exhaust flange. I am thinking about attempting to loosen the flange bolts and carefully rotate the flange and exhaust so that I have enough clearance to remove the plug and install the probe. I thought I would slow down …

March 2, 2020 at 7:22 am Hello – I have a 2000 Carver with a pair of 6CTA 450’s. I am in the process of upgrade the dash and was planning on using VDO Temp Gauges. The boat has dual helms. I have searched for dual station VDO temp senders and have not had much luck. What options are available for dual station senders that work with the VDO temp gauges? Thanks Steve

February 21, 2019 at 5:10 pm Hello – First, I apologize if this has been covered previously. I am getting close to purchase a 2000 Year boat with two 8.3 6CTA that did well during the engine survey. I come from an automotive manufacturing background and our quality system requires that we maintain a good set of spare parts for “key equipment”. On the boat, I have concluded that the engines are “key equipment”. I expect to take the boat to Ba…

February 23, 2019 at 3:22 pm Hello – First, I apologize for posting another message on this topic. I have read the previous threads but need some help thinking through the next steps on a potential boat purchase. The boat ran well during the sea trial with the an experienced engine surveyor. Cold Startup, temps, smoke etc were monitored and the surveyor left to prepare his report which was expected to include a few small items to repair. Attached are the oil sam…

February 23, 2019 at 5:18 pm Seen this several times and we always go back to the statement that a single oil sample usually causes more questions than answers and complicates sales transactions. What would you rather have, a boat with low hours and dirty oil samples or a boat with 2-3 times the hours thatā€™s used regularly and has clean oil sample history (many oil samples to compare to)?? The best engine survey info that reflects overall condition on the engine is in how i…
