October 30, 2018 at 6:08 pm Your tips and tricks? Seems like an easy question but after paying for an engine detail in order to paint realized it will take a lot more cleaning prep to do the job right. Detailer was afraid to use anything stronger than Dawn and Simple green mixed with light water wash down. Upon inspection no way you could paint, paint would not stick well as still too much oil film and residue in around the nook and crannies. I have used Gunk or Purple pow…

November 1, 2018 at 3:39 am Rodger, There is no one method to accomplish what you want to do, as you have already figured out. Strong solvent in some areas, “purple cleaners” in others, steam cleaning, a “wire brush”, an “air compressor” blow gun, , etc etc.. It all comes down to one thing “ELBOW GREASE” as the common denominator, mixed in with common sense.. Post some pics, “before & after” when you are do…

    • How to test Barry Cummins Motor Mounts

July 16, 2018 at 6:52 pm Two 20 yr. old 6BTAā€™s 2000hrs with Barry Mounts. others have suggested mounts at 20yrs have to be bad. Is there any way to test the mounts other than look for engine vibration and engine movement when running ? They look good the center pin is mostly centered when not running. Have a problem with PYI Dripless packing alignment to shaft is not as centered as it could be even though engine alignment has not changed. PYI says stern tube is not…

July 25, 2018 at 6:43 am I don’t think a few thousandths of an inch on something that is compressed ~1″ is an issue. How about some real pictures (not thumbnails like your priors) where we can actually see the entire setup, from the tranny coupler back to shaft log. Would be good to see what the spacing is and how much shaft you have exposed there. Maybe your shaft log misalignment is just too much for this complicated setup to work for you and to pass th…

May 30, 2018 at 6:45 pm Engines always in fresh water run good in a 1998 42ā€™ Bayliner Avanti. Some white smoke on startup normal until hot. All fluid levels and temps and pressures normal. No oil usage. Started picking up a pungent burnt or burning smell when at slow cruise which in the 1500 hrs. of useage I had never smelled before. Previously might get a station wagon diesel smell but not burnt smell. Have done all recommended services on all coolers, fluids, …

May 31, 2018 at 11:36 am Yes slow cruising allows for engine temps to reach 175-180D. River temp around 75-80D currently. At 2000-2400 RPM cruise engine temps around 190-195D depending on River temps which can get into low 90’s by end of summer. Just serviced all coolers. Have not been able to run any distance at higher RPM’s this year. All temps seem normal and consistent with the 15 yrs. I have run boat.
