Engines always in fresh water run good in a 1998 42’ Bayliner Avanti. Some white smoke on startup normal until hot. All fluid levels and temps and pressures normal. No oil usage. Started picking up a pungent burnt or burning smell when at slow cruise which in the 1500 hrs. of useage I had never smelled before. Previously might get a station wagon diesel smell but not burnt smell. Have done all recommended services on all coolers, fluids, values etc. etc. Using SMX seawater pumps for the last 1000 hrs. Have done a considerable amount of below 1600 RPM’s cruising. Have never performed a de-carbonization procedure and curious if that would be recommended or anything else you can suggest?

Yes slow cruising allows for engine temps to reach 175-180D. River temp around 75-80D currently. At 2000-2400 RPM cruise engine temps around 190-195D depending on River temps which can get into low 90’s by end of summer. Just serviced all coolers. Have not been able to run any distance at higher RPM’s this year. All temps seem normal and consistent with the 15 yrs. I have run boat.

Are you at least able to run her at thermostat opening temperature?

    Exhaust burnt smell

Ohio River Louisville Kentucky has been a mess this spring due to lots of rain and flooding. The little bit of cruising has pretty much been at low RPM settings to prevent prop damage due to debris in the water. We’ll get a chance shortly to do a little more long-distance running at higher rpm’s. Thanks for your reply.

Have you tried cruising her at higher rpms (higher EGT) ?
