      November 9, 2019 at 2:19 pm I have twin 2006 QSC 540HP engines with original factory Smart Craft displays. Last month both displays stopped showing engine info. When I shut down the motors and re-started the data would display. This went on intermittently for several days. Now the starboard gauge displays data consistently but the port side will not. I have unplugged the display, the computer and every connection in-between that I can find. Everything is clean and show…

      November 21, 2018 at 4:13 pm The photo of this core is from a 5.9 QSB 380hp with 12,000hrs. I’m glad I service the coolers every year per Tony’s instructions because this one was just starting to leak sea water. I was surprised to find a damaged surface and am hoping to get some advise on how to repair it. The housing and end caps look good and don’t appear to have any damage.

      July 15, 2018 at 6:21 pm Hi there. I am hoping to get a little help assessing my current propping arrangement and the extent of further required adjustments.       October 9, 2018 at 8:02 pm Nobody better than Wilmington. You are right where you need to be. Adding cup would give you lift but then you need to reduce pitch. It’s give and take. Enjoy it how it is. I have been down this road chasing a ghost. Our burn rate is slightly off port vs starboard as well.

      August 16, 2018 at 7:43 am I have a pair of QSB 380 motors with 11,000 hours on them. We service them EVERY 100 hrs. using Fleetguard fislters and Delo 400 15-40 oil. EVERY season the heat exchangers and after-coolers are removed and service on the bench per Tony’s protocol. This winter I removed the Airsep air filters, plugged the lines and ran a hose from the vent on top of the valve cover to a vented gallon bottle. All was well and the motors seemed to run gre…

      August 20, 2018 at 8:14 pm Thanks again Tony. Operating in Mexico sometimes “home made” is by necessity not necessarily preference. You probably don’t remember but you designed my exhaust risers after we burned a valve and Cummins was no help. That was back in the boat deisel days. I’m on my own here and you have bailed me out several times and helped me keep my head above water.

      July 27, 2017 at 3:31 pm Last winter while preforming maintenance on one of our QSC 540hp I discovered the coolant was black as coal. Tony said: “There are really only three things that would cause thisā€“Oil, combustion gases, or exhaust getting into the coolant and all of these would typically cause something external to be noticed” After a few questions he suggested changing the turbo gasket which did in fact solve the problem.       August 12, 2017 at 3:28 pm George, How fast do you need it? This winter when we service a pair of QSC motors the aftercooler cores didn’t want to come out of the housings. We purchased new coolers from Tony and completed our service. In my spare time I carefully pressed the cores out and rebuilt them for spares. The housings looked good but the cores a little rough. After cleaning and re-assembly they stood up to a pressure test. The reason I ask how fast is …

      November 21, 2016 at 10:41 am We put more than a 1000 hours on our QSC 540’s every year. Ā Just to be safeĀ I service the heat exchangers and aftercoolers every year per Tony’s tips with Metal-lube and so on. I am just draining out the green coolant we put in this spring and it is now as black a coal. Ā Does anybody have any ideas what would cause this?

      May 1, 2017 at 6:13 pm I’ve searched thru the forums here, boatdiesel, and Tiara but struck out.Ā  Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have twin QSB 5.9 engines with cone shaped air filters that look like K&N linen filters used in cars.Ā  Should I just wash them in mild detergent and oil them with K&N oil?Ā  Or do I just replace them? Ā  At what interval?Ā  Thx. Ā Ā

      May 13, 2017 at 9:15 am Thanks for the information. Ā Again, I learn something new, which is why I asked. I have no idea if/when the internal coalescing filter was changed. Ā I also don’t know when/if the filter was cleaned last. Ā 1000 hours on the engine at this point, of which 250 were hours I put on over a year. So far as I mentioned above, the gauge on the Airsep has not shown any restriction, but I think it is time to clean the filter just based on its appeara…

      February 18, 2017 at 9:13 am I was at a fishing show yesterday and found a product made by Maritime Expressions. It is a biodegradable descaler that the exhibiter claims can be circulated through an engine raw water system to clean scale and deposits from heat exchangers and after coolers eliminating having to disassemble.Ā  Does anybody have any experience with this type of product. Tony, I would appreciate hearing you view.Ā

      February 18, 2017 at 3:57 pm My take on running a descaler through the raw water loop (Rydlyme, Barnacle Buster or any other flavor) Ā is that it is a “quick fix” to avoid downtime for when temps start to creep up in the height of the season….Get the temps down for the remainder of the season and then on layup pull the coolers for the proper “on-bench” servicing. Ā

      December 2, 2016 at 6:00 am Servicing the heat exchanger on one of my QSC 540 motors I discovered the water deflector at the end of the core has some holes eaten in it. Ā The slots on the end cap sit over the damage so it seems like over kill to replace it. I’m not sure what action to take? Ā Repair it with JB weld, lead solider, silver solider or just leave it along?
