February 2, 2021 at 1:34 pm 1. What is the correct idle r.p.m. Cummins 6CTA 400? 2. Is it best to adjust the rpm at the throttle levers (helm) ?

February 3, 2021 at 9:13 pm Read this: Nippon Denso EP9 Idle – Bumper Spring Adjustment These engines are not very idle friendly—————-Final number is usually between 600-& 750, meaning “seat of your pants”..

November 14, 2020 at 11:56 am My 6CTA’s were refitted with SMX raw water pumps by the previous owner. The pressure port is feeding the PSS dripless packing seal. In my opinion the pressure and flow from the pump is way too much (maybe 5x) for this purpose. When the dripless system was replaced 2 years ago the amount of water escaping between the carbon disc and the stainless steel collar was frightening at 1700 rpm. So anyone have thoughts on this??

November 15, 2020 at 8:30 am Two things here to deal with.. 1) As the aftercooler, gear cooler and HX clogs with “stuff” from lack of maintenance, the pressure increases inside the pump 2) We ALWAYS put a 1/8″- 5/32″ ID restrictor about 1″ long inside the feed hose when tapping into that port on any pump..This has been SOP for us for close to 30 years………………Alternate way is to slide a 6″ -12″ pie…

    • how to test panel alarm circuit board

April 3, 2020 at 10:15 am 6cta ser# 44908536 When the circuit board is connected the alarm sounds. I believe that the engine oil pressure, voltage, and temps are within normal operating range. What voltages should I have at the board across the “J” terminals?? Any other tips to trouble shoot this problem? Frank

April 3, 2020 at 5:31 pm When the engine is running and up to operating temperatures, what do these gauges read at idle and at cruise RPMs: VDC Oil Pressure Coolant Temp You have 4- warning lights– do they work at all? The LOW oil pressure light should be on when the engine goes off and then go away after starting You have a “water in fuel light”–Do you ever see it on? Post a good picture of the front & the back of the panel

    • Stbd oil pressure gauge indicates low

May 17, 2019 at 1:28 pm 6CTA. OP Gauge indicates 16 psi @ cold idle. Replaced the sender = no change. Replaced OP Gauge = no change. Installed mechanical OP Gauge directly into oil filter housing port, (removed 1/8 NPT pipe plug, screw in the gauge), it indicates 60 psi @cold idle. I think the mechanical gauge reading is good ?, assuming that the port is a valid place to connect it ??? Is it possible for the Cummins sonalert circuit board to effect the OP Gauge rea…

May 18, 2019 at 4:58 am Yes, the filter head is a good location. To be thorough, did you secure the gauge in place and monitor the pressure at different rpms once the engine comes up to full temp? No, the circuit board will NOT effect your instrument readings. It is for alarm/buzzer only. Sounds like losing some voltage from the engine to the helm. Of course bad grounds can do this but another culprit is this 10amp engine mounted circuit breaker. Check it out inclu…

April 26, 2019 at 7:09 am when the 6cta engines crank it seems as if the first 1/4 turn of the crankshaft is slow, then it speeds up and starts instantly. What is the recommended MCA for the batteries?

April 26, 2019 at 7:27 am More than likely a weak connection in the starting circuit & not the battery CCA’s. I’d start there– Every end of each battery cable removed , cleaned shiny and greased ( white lithium) and then put back together, TIGHT. Don’t forget the battery switches & all grounds Tony

    • Fireboy failure

April 12, 2019 at 12:32 pm I recently experienced a fireboy fire suppression system failure on my twin 1994 6cta powered boat. Many of the controls aren’t working properly now, the blower, voltmeters etc. I am in the process of getting the fireboy control replaced but I am concerned about the turbos. The fireboy caused a hot shut down and I am concerned that my turbos were ruined. The boost gauges fail to register, as these are mechanical I can’t imagine that …
