May 26, 2023 at 10:00 am Twin QSB 5.9, 380 hp.Ā  I ran my boat down the east coast to Florida.Ā  Near the end of the trip, the starboard engine exhaust showed black smoke above 1800 rpm.Ā  Assuming it was a rich condition, I cleaned and replaced the air sep filter and oil separator filter, drain and piping, checked the turbo etc. no improvement.Ā  I finally pulled the after cooler and removed the core to find this mess (see pic). The core was destroyed and possibly, probabl…

The boat is a 2005.Ā  I bought it in 2017 and had the after coolers serviced at purchase by Cape Cod Marine (a certified Cummins shop).Ā  I saw the service work in process, disassembled, cleaned, plenty of the recommended grease.Ā  Around three years ago, I serviced them myself using the same p…

May 2, 2021 at 4:45 am Dave, You need to stand back 2-3 ft and post of pictures of the entire riser and the connection to the hose.. Maybe a few angles & perspectives…… What you have is 100% custom, and from the looks of the exhaust flange where it is attached to the turbo, I think you may have some other serious issues going on.. Best to REMOVE the insulation before you post better pictures..

May 6, 2019 at 10:36 am Hi all – odd issue on one of my 2006 QSB 355s yesterday. After hitting ~1800 rpm my starboard motor lost power and I had to get home on idle rpm. Couldn’t get throttle response until a few hours later when I restarted the engines and starboard subsequently worked fine. I opened dash and verified throttle cycled through the linkage and was connected. After starboard started working again I took a trip, got on plane and everything was…

May 11, 2020 at 6:33 am Just got 390 sea ray with 380 QSB 1000 Hours. Engines were surveyed and oil samples came clean. When I ran the boat for the first couple of days with engine sync ON, I’ve noticed that the port engine burns 2 more gp/h more and has a higher load by about 10%. I’m worried sick that I got a broken engine šŸ™ Here are some technical details. WOT both engines show 99% load with about 100 RPM difference. With engine Sync ON at 2630 RPM Temp…

June 27, 2020 at 6:41 am I have an ’05 390 Sundancer as well with QSB 5.9’s. Just had props scanned and repitched because I was above the curve and wasn’t making max RPMs. Props scanned at 21×23 in. They repitched to 21x 21.5 in and that brought me down to the curve. Also had a cyclical vibration at around 1000 RPMs that went away with the prop service.

May 19, 2020 at 5:20 am I have twin QSB 5.9s. I removed the valve covers and inspected the rocker assemblies. The starboard engine was clean. The port engine rockers had a film of soot/carbon (easy to see on the red and yellow injector wiring). Any ideas why this would be the case? I am replacing all the Airsep filters as a precaution. August 23, 2019 at 5:40 am You might find that those Aftercoolers are hard to take apart since they are over 10yrs old. Since Cummins did not lube the radiator core/aftercooler casing interface at the factory, you might be in for a bit of a surprise when they are dismounted, taken apart and the core needs to be “Persuaded” out of the casing. Yes the fresh water situation will be better than it being in Salt water but we are still talking 10+ years of marine …

    • Change idle rpm on QSB?

This topic has 19 replies, has 8 voices, and was last updated byJon Fitch 4 years ago

May 15, 2019 at 1:22 pm I have a QSB 5.9, idle is set to the standard 600. Can it be set up using the Cummins Insight software (or some other means)? I do not have the C-Cruise option. The alternator cannot keep up with the draw at that speed and I get low voltage warnings. At about 675 it is break even and no problems, so I’d like to get it set to 675. I’ve called two Cummins service reps and they don’t seem to know how.

May 28, 2019 at 12:54 pm If you can fit a smaller pulley without over speeding the alternators, that’s probably the easiest/cheapest route. I’ve run out of time to chase this but I think my ultimate solution involves a hair pin stator alternator, either Balmar’s or someone else’s. The Delco 24 and 28 are similar to the hair pin style.

But my main question is, these are connected directly to my battery…should they be, or should they connect somewhere else?? Iā€™d rather have nothing connected to my batteries if I donā€™t have to other than the engine and battery charger thanks guys Cummins qsc8.3 600hp

April 1, 2019 at 8:04 am The 9-pin diagnostic connector only has 4 pins, 2 for power and 2 for J1939 data. Your reader must be able to interpret J1939 DM1-based fault codes.
