Buddy of mine is looking at a 2008 38’ Sabre with a pair of 400 hour 380 hp QSB’s. The boat has spent its life in the Columbia River in the Portland area where the water is fresh not salt. Pictures show engines that look new with no sign of dirt, grunge, leaking or anything bad at all. My buddy has seen the boat and been aboard for a sea trial. He said that the engines ran like new, showed no signs of overheating and made full rpm’s.
The question is, what is the likelihood that the aftercoolers will be ok after not being opened for 11 years?
I’m thinking that they should be serviced before the boat is placed into service in its new salt water home. Is there any chance that the coolers will be unserviceable?
I see that the seawater pumps look original so I suspect that they should be swapped out, anything else to be concerned about?

    Some more guidance

You might find that those Aftercoolers are hard to take apart since they are over 10yrs old. Since Cummins did not lube the radiator core/aftercooler casing interface at the factory, you might be in for a bit of a surprise when they are dismounted, taken apart and the core needs to be “Persuaded” out of the casing. Yes the fresh water situation will be better than it being in Salt water but we are still talking 10+ years of marine aging and different metals touching each other.

As you mentioned the water pumps will need looking at. I would also recommend looking at the Heat Exchanger(remove and clean) and Exhaust configuration.

And as always make sure the engines are propped correctly and the fuel burn is in spec.

Let us know how it goes.

Should be little or no corrosion but they could be plugged with organic stuff. Check the impellers on the sea water pumps see if they need replacing (where on the blade end lobes).
