6BTA 5.9 coolant drain procedure

March 12, 2019 at 9:13 am Hi, Relatively new to diesel maintenance so please forgive me if this question is a little basic for this forum. The water heater on our boat is leaking and I’ve ordered a new unit. Before beginning the replacement I want to make sure that I understand the procedure for properly draining the coolant and replacing it so as to avoid air pockets. I know that I could probably avoid draining all of the coolant but since I do not know when the…

April 17, 2019 at 11:00 am Hello All, I would like to start performing my own oil changes. I am at the 75 hour mark since the last change. Engines: Cummins 6BTA 5.9 330hp @ 2800 Hours: 1,051 for each engine I have been trying to identify a step by step process for the oil change protocol, but have not had any luck. For example, what hardware are you using to extract the oil? I have located various oil change kits on West Marine and Amazon etc…, but I wanted to s…

Parker hose is not really necessary but I believe in fabricating for the long haul and peace of mind, not just something to get by. I too remove the fuse when not in use, just a little insurance. Sorry so long in replying, just today found that notifications of postings have been going to junk mail.

Home heating oil versus marine diesel

March 30, 2020 at 10:30 am Hello new member here. I hope everybody is doing well with all the craziness going on involving this virus. I am completely new to the Diesel world and just recently purchased my first after many outboards. 2004 Tiara 3500 twin Cummins 6bta 370 hp. I have a ton to still learn but I want to thank the Sbar community for the wealth of knowledge I have learned online over the past few months. I know this topic has been probably discussed before but …
5 RepliesApril 5, 2020 at 6:40 pm I know direct marine fuel was having some issues. May be out of the game. Things are very strange right now. Either way put Vacuum gauges on your filters. Just as important as the gauges at your helm. Plenty of information on that here.

September 16, 2019 at 4:24 pm Good evening, All. Thanks for such a great site and for all of the info. I have spent many hours researching here since we purchased our first diesel just over a year ago. I learned what I needed to winterize everything last fall as well as much about diesel engines in general. Boat info: 2001 Mainship Pilot 30 Hardtop (1) 6BT5.9-M, manufacturer date 7/7/2000 600 hours, she had about 560 on her when we purchased last August Engine serial number …
9 RepliesOctober 7, 2019 at 11:23 am Eric, I hope you having more luck keeping your 6BT running. I high recommend installing a permanent vacuum gauge. I had a similar issue to you this season and like you my boat has fairly low hours which essentially means your not polishing your fuel enough. These engines pump a ton more fuel though the return than they use so they are always cleaning the fuel. This was my first full season and had no issues till I ran the boat in a 3′ to …

Fuel Cooler Removal on 6BTA 5.9 M3
This topic has 15 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
July 31, 2019 at 10:34 am I just purchased the Seaboard Marine Fuel Cooler removal kit and found that there is a conflict/interference that does not allow me to install the fittings provided for the fuel supply. There is a banjo fittings from the starboard mounted fuel filter to the fuel injector that interferes with the new fitting installation. Is there a fix or different combination of fittings that will allow me to install the kit? Thank you.

Fresh water flush design

July 29, 2019 at 2:30 pm I’m considering how to install a fresh water flush system on my boat to both flush the system, as well as help winterize. I made up a draft diagram – are there any obvious errors? Some details: Designed so I can simply attach the fresh water hose and run the engines to flush. Engines would be flushed regularly; AC included mainly for winterization purposes. Want to flush 3 systems: Main engine (QSB 6.7 480), Cummins Onan 7.5 kWh G…
7 RepliesAugust 1, 2019 at 8:29 am Hi Brad I remember seeing one on youtube a guy did on a 6bta, really neat but simple design. Just search 6bta fresh water flush and you should see it. If I recall correctly he removed a plug on the sea water pump and piped up his inlet with valve in to the pump. Good Luck

September 10, 2018 at 10:14 am Any reason why I couldn’t install a fresh water flush input at the bung on the SMX water pump. I seems to me that this would allow the fresh water (engine is off) to circulate past the impeller, through the entire system, and then down the exhaust. I do have the right elevations so that the exit water wouldn’t back up the wrong direction…

January 19, 2017 at 8:08 am Years ago, following Tony’s recommendation, I hooked up fresh water flush fittings to my engine’s strainer and started flushing religiously. Within less than a year I noticed that the engine zincs were holding up much better; in fact after three years they are still going strong. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

New boat, new to diesels

April 17, 2019 at 12:16 pm Hi all, I’ve put in an offer on a new boat and am getting ready to see it for the first time. Coming from a freshwater cooled Mercruiser outdrive setup, the transition to a straight shaft diesel is quite a change. I’ve been doing some research but still feel very much the newbie. What kinds of things should I look for upon my initial viewing of the boat? Assuming all goes well, what kinds of things are important that I should do re…
19 RepliesJuly 1, 2019 at 7:58 am Tony, I defer to your expertise. I can say that the oil has just been changed. The sea trial was performed on commission so it had not been run. There was almost zero time on the new oil. The boat had not been idled dockside on the changed oil. It was at near idle speed for 10-15 minutes each way in a no-wake zone to and from the sea trial area. During the sea trial the engine was at temp and run at a variety of speeds for about 30 minute…

Racor filter model for a 6BTA 370

May 21, 2019 at 10:10 am I am helping a friend move a boat he has just bought from Baltimore to LI. The boat has no spares onboard so we wanted to get everything before we went down to it. Can anyone tell me what model Racor filter is used for the Cummins 6BTA 370? David

April 20, 2019 at 3:55 pm Hi guys, 6bta Cummins, i am installing Envirovent to stop my air breathers from puking oil… see the amount of oil that poured out upon removing air filter. Not sure how these engines were breathing. The walker sep had a small oil line On the very back, i believe it is an oil line draining back into the oil pan through a small filter. This kit came with no instructions. Just parts, I never like to see that but it seems pretty self expla…
10 RepliesMay 14, 2019 at 11:25 am It’s a few weeks late but maybe someone looking for the information may come across it. The plug size to remove the entire drain back line is 9/16 SAE or know as a -6 ORB plug. I bought one from my local hose and clamp shop but you can find them on Amazon or Ebay. Remove the line when you do an oil change and pan is empty. Asking for a -6 ORB plug is probably the simplest way to describe it.

Distribution block removal – oil sensors
This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
May 13, 2019 at 11:05 am I want to remove my oil/fuel distribution block from a 6BTA, but I have 2 oil sensors… I think one would be referred to as a oil sensor and the other an oil sender? Anyway, I guess it doesn’t matter what they are, but how can I go about removing the distribution block and then adequately reinstalling both of these sensors with a decent way to attach to the motor that would be better than the distribution block?
5 RepliesMay 14, 2019 at 10:53 am That works Brian as to leaving the oil connections but eliminating the fuel connections because it’s the fuel leak that are the real PITA with the block.

April 30, 2019 at 11:37 am I was rereading props move boats engines just turn them. I understand itās possible to load an engine rated at say 500 HP @ 2800 WOT rpm to produce 500 HP at say 2000 WOT RPM (overpropped) and the fuel burn in both cases should be the same as published on the manufacturers charts, correct? Oil Drain Hoses

April 9, 2019 at 8:59 pm Hey Guys, Just read my insurance and value survey and one recommendation is to replace my “blue” engine oil drain lines. I have a 1996 6bta5.9 250 HP engines, seems odd that this was suggested. The hoses look fine to me, has anyone had these hoses fail from engine heat? If I do go ahead and replace, are they simply hydraulic lines? Tony, I see you sell two types but none for my model, is this something I could fabricate locally? T…

December 10, 2018 at 7:50 am I have a 370hp version of the 6bta, it has 130 hours, it was a factory rebuild installed a couple years ago. I recently had the head gasket replaced due to an overheat issue (raw water intake left closed).
