March 3, 2021 at 5:33 am I wish to have a complete set of documentation for my 6B5.9-M from 1994. It was installed new in 2005 and seen few hours, but the manuals are not holding up. I seek the Owners Manual, which I believe is number 4960270 from Cummins search of my ESN. I assume there is also a parts manual, installation manual and technical workshop manual. I am unsure about what exactly I have and what is needed and what can be shared with the industrial line and t…

March 3, 2021 at 6:48 pm Maybe try Seaboard through email. Do you have Cummins dealer near to you? Give them a phone call. Have the specific model number and the serial number at hand. My boat came with the owners manual and parts manual thanks to the P.O. I got the workshop manual many years later plus some other things by calling my local dealer. I had to wait as they didn’t stock them but could order them

    • 6B5.9-M Air Filter

March 3, 2021 at 5:37 am The air filter on my 1994 6B5.9-M is mounted on top where there is little clearance. In looking at similar engines, it seems like the filter should be horizontally mounted. I am unsure about what is proper, but it seems the original would fit better in my case and I don’t know why it was ever changed. I’m missing the specific details in my documentation and have found no help elsewhere. I would like to upgrade the sir filter to a per…

    • 6B belt spring tensioner mystery

August 31, 2019 at 1:10 am I have an old (circa 1994) 6B5.9M. When I went to replace the alternator, I discovered that the spring tensioner is on the loaded side of the alternator. From memory and the specs, the engine should be turning clockwise when facing the front of the engine, i.e. the crankshaft and alternator end. Take a look at the attached. The belt is removed in the photo but if you look to the right of the alternator you’ll see the spring tensioner ther…

August 31, 2019 at 8:19 pm The “system” is generally reliable and overall trouble free.. Removing the belt and checking this every 2-3 years or every 1000 hours would be prudent with replacement of everything that spins at 2000 hours intervals should be considered. In a car, 2000 hours at an average speed of just 30 MPH is 60,000 miles.. Tony

    • Converting 6B5.9M from 12 to 24 volts

December 18, 2018 at 3:40 am My 6B5.9M was manufactured in 1994 but installed new in 2004 in my sailboat. I’m now converting my electrical system to 24volts and was originally planning to just swap out the alternator and leave the rest of the relatively simple engine electrical systems at 12V. However, as it turns out only a few electronics items need 12V and a simple DCDC converter can handle them nicely. In many ways it would be simpler to convert all to 24V, but h…

February 19, 2019 at 2:05 am I am still battling with a dual voltage system and have not decided where I land. My latest thought is this. What about using a 24V alternator and starter motor with but keep the 12V panel and starter solenoid? I already must provide low current 12v loads for NMEA2000 and etc. It is then easy to power the panel with that system. This means I can have a 24V start and house batteries and this greatly simplifies charging and redundancy, etc. The 12…

    • Convert delco alternator to high output J180

This topic has 6 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byPhilip 5 years ago

January 29, 2019 at 8:05 am I have a Cummins 6B5.9m engine with a Delco 2″ single foot 10si type mount alternator. I’d like to replace that with a big truck alternator that uses a J180 style mount. I’m worried about the bracket design so belt alignment angles under load is good and doesn’t powder the serpentine belt. The engine has plenty of front end power (72 HP) so I’m not worried about that. I can’t find a bracket to fit and will pro…
