I have a Cummins 6B5.9m engine with a Delco 2″ single foot 10si type mount alternator. I’d like to replace that with a big truck alternator that uses a J180 style mount. I’m worried about the bracket design so belt alignment angles under load is good and doesn’t powder the serpentine belt. The engine has plenty of front end power (72 HP) so I’m not worried about that. I can’t find a bracket to fit and will probably need to fabricate one.

Take a look at the attached photo. The the 2″ delco mount is bolted to the block with a bracket. It looks like I could remove that and replace it with a new bracket with the same hole pattern but with a J180 style mount. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

1—————You do not have a stock mounting system anyway–See that lower bracket.. You can use that again

2—————You need to buy a new top Alternator mounting bracket

3—————-Then you need to buy the alternator

    4————–Put it all together

We can help but you have to drop me a direct note..

Hi Tony, is this something that you can help with? Also, I’m wondering is if a J180 cradle mount could simply use the same bracket but attached to the outside rather than the inside? The outside measurement of the existing bracket is 3.5″. I would need to add 1/2″ to make it 4″ for the J180 and also fill the middle 2″ so the tabs on the alternator won’t break when the bolt is torqued. The 1/2″ extra could be added where needed to align the belt. Sounds dodgey.

The better alternative is of course a new J80 bracket that fits into the old hole pattern used for the 2″ delco mount.

What you want to do is very doable and parts to convert are available..You just need to realize that before you buy the alternator you will spend $250-$450 to do it..,, How much will be 1st dependent on your current belt wrap.. Need good pics that are CLEAR & in-focus.

    Look at the attached .PDF
