January 26, 2023 at 5:46 pm I just serviced my 6BTA 330 aftercoolers at 5 years from previous servicing. Ā No pitting, corrosion, calcium, and just very light soot on the air side. Cores pressed out easily. I attribute this to a friendly environment of 3 months per year in salt water, 9 months in fresh lake water, and following the SBMAR protocol since new. Happy Camper.

January 27, 2023 at 9:13 am Yes, aftercooler servicing is rather simple and straightforward and pays big dividends.Ā  Clearly the 9 months of freshwater life is a big help too.Ā  If you have some photos do post them.Ā

October 3, 2022 at 12:55 pm 6BTDA, 330s, cpl 1975. Found soft plastic pieces in bilge under fan belt, and some nestled under pulley.<br />Canā€™t trace the source, pulleys all spin freely. Need help figuring where they came from and what to do. Also, can I run the engine at lower rpm (1,000) to warm it up for an oil change while I sort this out? Thanks much, Ā Bruce

November 19, 2020 at 9:57 am Delco 19SI, 5 years old, Cummins 330ā€™s. Canā€™t get the 3 wire plug out. Is there a tab on it that Iā€™m missing? Any tricks to removal without damage? Thx, Bruce

    • Checking oil pressure with a mechanical gauge

December 19, 2018 at 2:31 pm I’d like to confirm oil pressure with a mechanical gauge on my 6BTA 330’s, and maybe leave the gauge(s) in place as a back up. The preferred hook up on top of the oil filter head is only doable with a 90 degree elbow since the heat exchanger is in the way. Of course, a tight fitting has the elbow pointed toward the block. Any way to get the elbow pointed the right way without over torquing or is there an easier place to tap into oil…

January 14, 2018 at 10:12 am Twin 6BTAs, 330s. Just over four years ago I replaced my P.O. neglected aftercoolers with sbmar lubed aftercoolers with the copper cores. I am now servicing the aftercoolers and happy to report that the cores slid out with finger pressure, there was no corrosion or pitting, very minor scaling, and minor oil residue. That said, the boat lives and breathes in salt water for over 3 months a year and mostly rests in fresh water for the remainder.…

January 20, 2018 at 12:15 am When these Cummins aftercoolers fail from neglect what usually happens. A friends volvo diesel aftercooler failed while offshore and he ended up rebuilding the engine. Sad thing is he had just rebuilt it 6 months before that. Thanks,
