November 27, 2016 at 4:09 pm Group: I have a friend that has C7 Cats in his pleasure vessel.   He is having a few issues, which is of course unpleasant.  However, the most unpleasant component is that he is, I believe, receiving poor service from the mechanics he has chosen.  He is new to all of this and really does not know any better. I do try to help him, but I am no expert.  My experience is limited to my time with my QSB Cummins and what I have learned from this (and p…

November 28, 2016 at 2:17 pm Tony Thank  you.  I did not know Erith worked on Cats.  Erith did the sea trial on Tax Break after his dad did a fluid change and cooler service. That was going on at the time when the shop was getting moved. He got married didn’t he? Thanks again Tony.

November 27, 2016 at 10:11 am Hello – We took our boat to the fuel dock today, and had an interesting experience during start up.  The boat had not been run in about a month.  The Port engine had to spin for about 15 seconds before it would fire.  That is a first for this boat.  Starboard fired right up.  Engines are 6cta 400 hp with nippon denso pumps.  The only thing different is that I had been using the lift pump priming handle on Port just to get a feel for it inc…

November 27, 2016 at 4:57 am As started elsewhere this is the summary of a repower of my 36′ Northern Bay Downeast boat from a damaged QSM 11/670 to a reman QSM/670 .   What seemed to at first be a simple plug and play turned into a seemingly endless series of one by one steps.  What was expected to be a 2 week out and in process turned into an almost 2 month affair.   Basics – Skipjack is a 36′ Northern Bay – classic Maine downeast hull.  Fully…

November 6, 2016 at 4:25 am I used to post on boatdiesel as Skipjack.    In 2012 I bought a used Northern Bay 36 with a QSM 670 with a chequered history, some of which was known, some unknown.  The original engine was manufactured in 2003, blown up in a Searay in 2005, rebuilt in 2007 and dropped into my boat in 2008, and restarted in 2009. when I got it in 2012 it only had 550 hours , but also had 9 years of marine age.   The boat was overpropped and on a rugged trip…

November 23, 2016 at 7:28 pm Space constraints, cost, weight, complexity, low hull speeds, the list goes on as to why hybrids aren’t really suitable for smaller (and especially planing) vessels. Reality is that the power that a gallon of fuel contains far exceeds what can be garnered from a battery based hybrid setup. My boat can do 1,000NM on a full tank of fuel that’s housed under the aft deck alone. To obtain that range from a battery, even the best lithium, …
