March 7, 2023 at 1:15 pm I am running a 35 Bertram with a pair of 330 6btaā€™s.Ā

On the way home from our last charter I noticed the port engine running cooler thank normal. They normally run 185, and it was down about 178.Ā

I went down and checked the engine room, and noticed salt deposits around the lid of the coolant tank on the engine. Saltwater was leaking out around the lid. When we got home we tested it and sure enoug…

    • 6BTA 330 Losing Oil Pressure

February 7, 2023 at 6:07 pm I recently took a job running a boat that has a pair of 6bta 330 engines. I don’t have a lot of history on the engines, other than they were “rebuilt” about 3000 hours/3 years ago, and have been running fine with no major issues since then.Ā After changing the oil, I have good oil pressure at cruise and idle on both engines. After approximately 40 hours, I start to slowly lose oil pressure on the STBD engine. At approximately 6…

February 8, 2023 at 7:08 am Thanks for the quick response. No I have not tested it with a mechanical gauge yet. I assumed, probably incorrectly, that since the gauge was working after each oil change and lost pressure at the same number of hours, that it wasnā€™t the gauge. Iā€™ll try to rustle up a gauge around here that I can use to test.Ā

    • Seafirst Ram Bleeding

July 11, 2022 at 12:15 pm Hello, I have a Seafirst ram that I have installed and am attempting to bleed.Ā My question is specific to the bleeder valves that come on it. When I attempt to back them off even a 1/4 turn to allow fluid to escape and begin bleeding, fluid leaks out of the threads where it screws into the T fitting. On the sea star bleeder valves I have used in the past you could back them off almost two full turns and the only place fluid would escape is out …

    • Cleaning/Servicing Envirovent Filters

June 4, 2020 at 10:48 am Canā€™t really find a conclusive answer. Is it acceptable to clean envirovent filters with dawn/fresh water? Do you re-oil with the standard K&N filter oil? Or are specialized cleaning/oil recommended? Thank you, Rob

September 20, 2020 at 4:34 am rod, IMO, I do not think there is a yes or no or right or wrong answer here. Every engine room is different as to ambient conditions, ventilation, blowby, salt air, etc etc. But I do not think you can go wrong with proper cleaning and re-oiling of the air filters if done right. Here it is on S&B’s sight, scoll down for how-to video, etc. https://www.sbfilters.com/cleaning-kits/precision-ii-cleaning-oil-kit

    • QSB Mystery Noise

April 17, 2019 at 9:26 pm Just finished a wave of spring maintenance on my QSB 5.9 380’s. After running her home from the boatyard this week I noticed a clicking/knocking noise while at the dock. I cannot isolate where it is coming from exactly other than it is on the front of the engines somewhere near the belts/alternator/fuel pump/water pump. I recently replaced the water pumps with SMX pumps, and I originally thought it was coming from the tensioner for the w…

    • SMX Water Pump Install Q's

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byCorey Schmidt 5 years ago

March 12, 2019 at 5:26 pm Just purchased a pair of SMX water pumps from Seaboard for my QSB 380HP 5.9 engines. V-belt setup. When installing them I ran into an issue. The belt wheel will not fit on the hub of the new pump. Whereas the wheel set flush against the flange on the old pump, it only goes partially up the tapered portion on the new pump, and leaves a 1/8″ gap between the pump wheel and the flange. Do I need to upgrade my belt wheel for these pumps? Than…

March 19, 2019 at 10:49 am Let me start by saying THANK YOU to those who contribute here. I am extremely thankful for the wealth of information that is available. I a 38′ Scarborough with twin QSB 5.9 380’s. Have been going through them this spring with many updates and maintenance that would not have been possible without all of the insights available. So far I have installed SMX water pumps, new port gear cooler, new bulk fuel filter system w/priming bulb, s…

March 20, 2019 at 3:31 am Robert, I was thinking mechanical when I advised on the submerged fuel return. As per Cummins, the common rail engines do not use submerged returns. See attached.
