Water filter with additive for C-Series Cummins

March 1, 2017 at 8:37 am I’ve owned my 2005 Sea Ray with twin 480 CEs for less than a year.Ā I had a reputable diesel tech do the winterizing/maintenance last fall and I supplied the filters, zincs, etc.Ā The previous owner used a Fleetguard WF2073 water filter so that is what I bought.Ā However, looking into the issue further I see this filter supplies 8 units of DCA4 coolant additive, and other part numbers are available with more, less, or none of the additive.…
7 RepliesMay 9, 2020 at 10:34 pm Thanks Tony.! PS For sale – 2 x WF2073s. Going cheap! š Tony Athens wrote: If you started with good coolant, a WF2073 should go 1000 hours with no issues..

Fleetguard Fuel Filters

March 11, 2017 at 1:22 pm I use the Seaboard Double Double system for my fuel filtration. Ā My vacuum gauges are reading about 2″-3″ mm HG. Still in the green zone. A friend who is a powerplant generator operator said the filters need to be changed out every 2 years regardless of the reading because the paper elements break down. Ā I have never heard that. Ā Is that something to be concerned with or should the vacuum gauge be the determining factor. Thanks in ad…
12 RepliesDecember 7, 2019 at 6:30 am On a Cummins electronic engine ( can’t speak for others as I do not know there “fuel system”), max fuel flow occurs only under load, plus on an average, total fuel flow is measurably less with the common rail engines. As a comparison– Max fuel flow with any QSB 5.9 is about 50 GPH at full engine load/RPM Max Fuel flow with a 6BTA 5.9 370 is about 73 GPH and occurs at approx 1800- 2000 RPM in neutral or under load. Buy Boat – seeking engine input

June 14, 2017 at 7:35 pm I am in the process of purchasing a 2001 Mikelson 50 with Cummins 450C engines each having 1500 hours. The survey, mechanical inspection and sea trial are scheduled for next week. As a 4-decade sailor who recently sold a sailboat, I must say itās a little intimidating to look at the engines and other systems on this well cared for powerboat. I have read a fair amount about the engines (also intimidating) and, if the purchase goes through, well…
11 RepliesJune 21, 2017 at 10:27 pm All went pretty good with the survey and mechanical inspection today. Exhaust spillover height was a little short (10″). Rob nailed the aftercooler issues – this will be rebuilt or replaced when the purchase is concluded. Both engines started with a slight tape of the ignition in the cold start portion of the evaluation with zero smoke. After running at 1400 to 1600 for 15 minutes (again, no smoke or steam) moved to WOTfor 5 minutes…

QSB 5.9 vs. 480CE

May 19, 2017 at 5:18 am I am new to the site and new to big diesels, though I have been messing about in boats for a long time. Considering purchasing a 2004-07 Sea Ray, and looking at 390DA or 420DA. The 420 is equipped with the notorious 480CE, and I have read a lot about it’s propensity to drop valves. I have also read Tony’s article on propping the boat like a 450C, but I’m still getting the feeling that the engine is a bit fragile. The 390 Se…

Cleaning air filters
This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 6 years ago
May 1, 2017 at 6:13 pm I’ve searched thru the forums here, boatdiesel, and Tiara but struck out.Ā Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have twin QSB 5.9 engines with cone shaped air filters that look like K&N linen filters used in cars.Ā Should I just wash them in mild detergent and oil them with K&N oil?Ā Or do I just replace them? Ā At what interval?Ā Thx. Ā Ā
8 RepliesMay 13, 2017 at 9:15 am Thanks for the information. Ā Again, I learn something new, which is why I asked. I have no idea if/when the internal coalescing filter was changed. Ā I also don’t know when/if the filter was cleaned last. Ā 1000 hours on the engine at this point, of which 250 were hours I put on over a year. So far as I mentioned above, the gauge on the Airsep has not shown any restriction, but I think it is time to clean the filter just based on its appeara…

February 16, 2017 at 10:54 am Hello, I have a 2005 Sea Ray with a pair of Cummins 480 CEs, Serial Numbers 46451414 and 46451379.Ā I want to buy a thermostat kit to include in a parts kit, but I see there is a choice of 160 or 180 degrees.Ā Do these engines come with 160 t-stats from the factory?Ā Is it best to stick with that?
6 RepliesMarch 6, 2017 at 10:10 am If you are still looking here then I would also seriously look into the alarms TOny has outlined. Ā They are in his Ā tips. Ā Ā One biggee might be the exhaust alarm.
