November 10, 2019 at 11:20 am Hey guys need some input. Think I have an idea whatā€™s up but would like to bounce it off Tony and the other guys. So today driving home cruising one motor starts stumbling a bit , I start backing down to check whatā€™s up and it stumbled right Down and shut off before I was able to. I changed Racor filter and re primed and after a lot of repriming finally got it to re fire. Motor now runs but has a top end knock and is pushing white smoke.Iā€™m leak…

    • Paul Gois Cummins 480 CE Exhaust Valve seat failure

December 12, 2019 at 7:40 pm Hello I am a new victim to the dropped valve problems these engines are so well known for. I have been reading everything I can find on this problem and a big TY to Tony and the full SB team. I had the problem back in Sept but due to a wedding and a rather difficult time finding an independent guy to do the job, itā€™s finally been opened up and verified. The head is toast and we are doing all six new pistons. Turbo was destroyed as well. The only…

February 8, 2021 at 8:28 pm I have a Cummins 480 CE with a dropped valve seat – head is off and it is quite obvious the problem. These are older engines 2004 I believe but have less than 700 hours on them (!) I am reading many stories of other owners with the same failures – Can you tell me anything about whether Cummins (for the engines) or SeaRay (for possible over-propping) will contribute to repair costs. I understand what needs to happen from a mechanical…

May 26, 2020 at 7:45 pm So I finally got everything wrapped up with new motor and have a vibration I canā€™t seem to locate or determine. I have changed cutlass bearings , had shafts balanced and trued, props balanced . Engine aligned with shafts, couplers face matched. Checked strut and appeared bedded strong. At neutral no vibration , in gear at idle no vibration. Soon as I get over about 1000 rpms a strong vibration starts on the starboard side and is strongest down…

June 15, 2020 at 2:14 pm Here are some. The PDF was after the motor blew and boat was hauled. Interesting looking at them myself also as it appears the prop had a couple inches clearance on starboard side prior and now it doesn;t I wonder if the prop depth was different between those props and the ones that are on there now.

    • 6 CTA 480 CE Turbo Exhaust Elbow Temp

June 9, 2020 at 4:31 am So I noticed yesterday when going for a slow cruise and checking things in the engine room that the exhaust elbow on the starboard side was much hotter then the port side. Only at the top of the elbow. The bottom on both sides of the elbow were cool and normal. I thought possibly it was just due to the design as the starboard side has a quicker turn and less distance to run to get out of the exhaust outlet. Any thoughts as to why this would be? …

    • 480 CE Intermittent Starting issue

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJJM 3 years ago

May 19, 2020 at 5:02 pm So I just got new motor installed and all set. The motor intermittently will sometimes fire right up and other times take many cranks and not fire at all. Then next try fires. Once the engine fires it runs perfectly at all rpms and loads. I have verified that when it does not start it is not getting fuel. Once it gets fuel fires right up. Injection pump was totally rebuilt, all new injectors , engine, turbo etc. Old parts used were just sea w…

May 27, 2020 at 7:56 am So I have trouble shooted the issue to the rack Positioning sensor inside the injection pump. Whenever the computer cannot find its location engine will not start. As soon as I cycle the switch and the engine sees the position engine will fire right up. I have tested the sensor ohms and it is in check. I can see all the live data on my scanner to know this. I am thinking either rack alignment needed or maybe sensor is intermittent ? Engine run…

Can Tong or someone first me to the proper method to compete this . Secondly I am curious how the injection pump is fed with oil. • 480 CE Fuel Burn too low?

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated bySteve Lewis 3 years ago

May 19, 2020 at 7:34 am So yesterday after many long months we finished up my new 480 CE engine and took it for a sea trial with props tuned and adjusted. Motor ran great. Fuel burn however is now at 25 gph at 2200 and 41 gph at WOT. I know that these are fine but its running below the 450 Curve even and I would like to utilize the motors power for what it is. My EGTS didn-t even crack 550 degrees while cruising so she is very comfortable. Would it be advisable to ad…

May 20, 2020 at 5:55 am JJM, Out of curiosity, what is your speed at 2200 RPM? The reason I ask is that instead of modifying your props and spending more money, you could just advance your throttles a little for more speed. The performance document for the 480CE has fine print about reduced power operation. 200RPM off the top. So you can run those up to 2400 and seeing that you are under the curve for the Diamond 450, you know you are in great shape. If you really …

April 20, 2020 at 5:55 pm Done Servicing my aftercoolers as per spec and have read about the other Cummins Engines with Aftercooler condensation issues and drains installed on later models. Is it necessary and or recommended to drill holes on the bottom of my after coolers to allow water to drain out? I see many different schools of thought on this. My gut is telling me no not to drill them as this water vapor moisture is normally passed through the engine anyhow without…

April 21, 2020 at 11:50 am I like the idea of a ball valve. Especially for learning and mapping how bad condensation is under your conditions. You may find you only need to open it once in a while, or only during the humid season, or you might consistently see condensation in there. If you get tired of opening the valve every run, then drill a pin hole in a plug an be done with it. If condensation doesn’t seem to accumulate, just leave it closed most of the time. …

March 24, 2020 at 2:50 am We could have, but that is neither here nor there, every exhaust job is fabricated based on it’s own measurements. Using all the height in the engine room, using the best radius possible, etc. is all about measurements and clearances that get down to at least 1/4″ or so of accuracy. No too engine rooms can be assumed identical, same year/make/model boat or not.

February 17, 2020 at 9:04 am Thanks Tony. So what would you say be the targeted range to be in the safe zone and not running too hot? IF Turbine out at 940 degrees at WOT is max that should put Turbine in temp around 1300. I know from my truck diesels 1350 sustained was typically the max you wanted to ever see before things started having issues and melting. Curious though how this correlates to a boat. Just looking to find the ideal range to be in the safe zone. Sounds …

    • Rated Cruise Rpms for HO

This topic has 13 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

January 1, 2020 at 8:16 am So I have a question on interpreting the Cummins power ratings for this usage. Based on what I read for example HO use is 1 hour of WOT for every 8 hours at or below the cruise rpms. Lets take a 6CTA for example. WOT is 2680-2700. In there chart it says 200 rpms below rated speed. So if I read this right you could cruise at 2400-2500 rpms all the time with out a problem and bring it up to 2700 for a total of 1 hour of run time within 8 hours? Am…

Take your 67 HP/liter truck…Put it on the interstate and drive at 70-75+ MPH.. What is your MPG? …

October 18, 2019 at 6:21 pm In process of purchasing a boat with these transmissions bolted up to Cummins 6CTA 8.3’s . The Oil analysis did not come back so great but the mechanics believe the fluid has never been serviced and that is why. It showed no issues of functioning when used ironically. No slippage. Let me know what you think? Is this normal with no fluid change and 635 hours or so? We changed fluids and are going to retest in 10 hours.

October 24, 2019 at 3:40 pm Phil,, Ya I know higher fuel burn that it can’t take in will lead to higher EGTS which will lead to failure in short order if excessive. That really goes with any diesel engine though. Heat is always the enemy. The way I see it is these engines had two issues from the factory. The defective heads that had problems with the valve seats and exhaust casting and secondly the issue that they were adding more fuel a essentially 450 engine witho…
