    • Warranty on Repairs by Cummins/Onan?

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRon Carter 1 year ago

September 14, 2022 at 8:02 pm A general question about the warranty, if any, you get if you hire a Cummins/Onan Location to repair your Cummins engine or Onan generator?Ā  Apparently there are two types of Cummins affiliates: Cummins dealers (which can be a boat dealer or independent repair shop) and genuine Cummins Locations where all they work on are Cummins/Onan products and work either at their location or provide field service to larger boats. So, is there a difference i…

September 16, 2022 at 6:57 am Thanks Tony, If I was selling my boat and one of the after survey conditions was me getting a fairly minor (about $2k) repair done on a 20 year old Onan. If this repair is done by a Cummins Factory Distributor there would be some kind of parts and labor warranty. Is this warranty transferable to the buyer? If not, it would be better to give the money to the buyer and have him do it…if he would agree to this.

    • One Engine Slow Spooling

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTom Jerome 1 year ago

July 3, 2022 at 6:00 am Twin 450hp 6CTA 8.3 Cummins mechanical engines with under 1,000 hours. When applying throttle to get on plane (with engine sync off) one engine is noticeably slower spooling up than the other one. No smoke that I can see and both will run WOT @ 2600 rpms The bottom is clean and all temps and pressures are normal. The injectors are less than 1 year old. Aftercoolers serviced off boat per Tony’s way 18 months ago. This is most noticeable af…

July 8, 2022 at 6:23 am I have the same issue, both engines hit the same WOT throttle after spooling. The article doesn’t talk about the issue specifically but it address low power. We have low power on 1 engine.Ā  Your RPMS at WOT is that with a phototach on the balancer or off your tachometers? Are you sure your tachs are calibrated? Mine were off by almost 300rpms at WOT. I spoke to several mechanics and they all agree the one engine is not getting the fuel it …

July 19, 2021 at 12:13 pm I recently bought a boat with these engines and the engine surveyor commented to the seller that the oil was at the low mark. The seller commented that it was supposed to be at the low mark, whereupon the surveyor replied “You must have been listening to Tony” . The engines are 2002 model with 700 hours, mostly in fresh water. They have zero blow by. All coolers, BTW, have been serviced the “Tony way” For some reason, I …

June 8, 2021 at 4:58 am I am under contract to purchase a 1994 Tiara 4000 Express with 1250 hours on the engines. As part of my due diligence I received copies of invoices for two recent service/repair jobs that were paid by the owner of the boat. The first one (October 2020) was for doing a 1,000 hour service in which included changing the fluids and cleaning the aftercoolers and heat exchangers for a total of $7393.00. The second service (January 2021) was done becau…

June 8, 2021 at 10:24 am It’s interesting that the company that did the work on the motor told you it would need “major” work. You’d think they would have fixed it the first time? And i have the same motors and have Airsep breather kits and never had an issue at all. Good luck.

    • Vibration in 8.3 540 QSC

This topic has 16 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byGene Fuller 2 years ago

November 9, 2017 at 6:27 am I have a single 2006 QSC 8.3 540 hp with 1400 hours. I normally cruise at 1600 rpms. As was coming into a marina in a long channel I noticed at lower rpms…1000-1200… enough vibration to make the drinking water in my glass shake. Speed back up to 1600 and all is smooth again. When I docked I noticed a more than normal vibration at idle and looked at the tack which read 600 rpms. I think it used to read 650 at idle. Any idea what i…

May 17, 2021 at 6:45 am The OP sold that boat a couple of years ago, and he may not be active on the forum. In any case, I believe the concept is that any “dirt” floating around in the engine room will show up as soil on the pure white cup.
