A general question about the warranty, if any, you get if you hire a Cummins/Onan Location to repair your Cummins engine or Onan generator?Ā  Apparently there are two types of Cummins affiliates: Cummins dealers (which can be a boat dealer or independent repair shop) and genuine Cummins Locations where all they work on are Cummins/Onan products and work either at their location or provide field service to larger boats.

So, is there a difference in the warranty you receive depending upon which affiliate you choose to do the repair on an out of factory warranty product?

    Thanks Tony,

If I was selling my boat and one of the after survey conditions was me getting a fairly minor (about $2k) repair done on a 20 year old Onan. If this repair is done by a Cummins Factory Distributor there would be some kind of parts and labor warranty. Is this warranty transferable to the buyer? If not, it would be better to give the money to the buyer and have him do it…if he would agree to this.

If you are dealing with a independentĀ  full warranty dealer, then the coverage and whatĀ  you should expect as to warranty coverageĀ  should be equal to a Cummins Factory Distributor…

But with that said,Ā  it all comes down the the tech that shows up to do the job..Ā  If a Cummins distributorĀ  tech, then expect the best but be prepared for quite a bit more time fromĀ  your side to deal with it.. The tech is on salary so he is not watching the clock as an independent dealer might/does….

As to us, ( full warranty dealer for 30+ yrs)–I typical fix what needs to be fixed and don’t bother with filing a warranty claim–What I get paid for it vs. the ADMIN time is rarely worth it….. I’m not on “salary”………..

You mentioned ONAN–I never touch it — 2-3xĀ  the admin time for us.
