I am under contract to purchase a 1994 Tiara 4000 Express with 1250 hours on the engines. As part of my due diligence I received copies of invoices for two recent service/repair jobs that were paid by the owner of the boat. The first one (October 2020) was for doing a 1,000 hour service in which included changing the fluids and cleaning the aftercoolers and heat exchangers for a total of $7393.00. The second service (January 2021) was done because the starboard engine had an exhaust leak, oil leak, would not turn up past 15000 rpm with heavy black smoke. This invoice totaled $11,188.00 and included a new turbo, water pump, and many other pieces and parts. So about $18,500 all in all.

Boat was sea trialed and it ran up to rated rpms with no leaks. What is disturbing is the next comment: “Rerouted breather hoses to intake side of turbo, had visible blow by coming out of hoses.”

My guess is that this engine is going to need major work. Please advise. Thanks

In the event of a Pearl Harbor situation, is it possible to do an in frame overhaul of an 8.3 with V drive?

It’s interesting that the company that did the work on the motor told you it would need “major” work. You’d think they would have fixed it the first time? And i have the same motors and have Airsep breather kits and never had an issue at all. Good luck.

Thanks. After talking to the company that did the work I am rejecting the boat. They said it will need major work and it can’t be done in frame.

    Ron,

Any chance you have pictures of the engine room? Good pictures of the exhaust setup, the turbos and piping from the turbo to the aftercooler.

The forum needs to see more before any kind of meaningful opinion can be rendered.
