    • Oil leaking where dip stick connects to engine block

July 24, 2020 at 6:44 am My port side Cummins 4BTA is leaking oil. Engine runs fine but under load oil sprays out of dip stick connection. After prolonged operation the oil pressure drops to zero and I end up with about two quarts of oil in the bilge. In order to prevent pollution I pulled the boat and it is currently blocked up on land. Any ideas on what can be causing this? It just started doing this on 7-18-20. Engine serial numbers 46038383 and 46043905 Thank you, …

August 26, 2020 at 8:50 am Boat is back in the water no oil issues. I did not change the check valve. Sold the boat, new owner was satisfied with the sea trial. Thanks for all the help, never would have expected it to be such a simple problem. DG

    • Wiring fuel shut off solenoid on a Cummins 4BTA

May 27, 2020 at 5:09 am I have read the fuel shut off articles and I cant seem to find an answer so here goes my question. There are three wires (red, white, and black) that come off of the fuel solenoid. The black is ground and is connected per Tony’s article directly to the bolt on the solenoid. The red wire holds the plunger in and works fine. The white wire that comes off of the wiring harness is DEAD. In order to start my engine I ran a new wire from the st…

August 24, 2017 at 5:24 am Hi all, The transmission went on the port engine of my 31′ Bertram, roughly 6 weeks ago and I have been unable to find anybody even interested in replacing it. The engine is a Cummins 4BTA (serial number 46043905), and the best I can tell the transmission is a Twin-Disc 5011A / 1.44:1. I am getting the transmission information from the starboard engine because the data plate on the port engine is missing. (see attached pictures). Also I am…

August 30, 2017 at 11:05 am First of all I would like to thank both of you for answering my question. Bill—-> That is a lot of good information, thank you! Now for the odd but good news: I went into the local Marine store here in Cape May to buy some penetrating oil, and ran into an old timer who asked me what I was using it for. I explained what had happened, and he said, “take off the mushroom cap and then try it”. Further he said it sounds like the …

July 14, 2017 at 5:54 am Thanks Mr. Athens, Love the new site! I could never exactly figure out why the sea max pump wouldn’t work either, but your pictures cleared it up for me. Foot note: I installed one of these Sherwood strainers on each raw water intake, (see attached), about 4 years ago, and haven’t had a pump go bad on me since. Not saying it would work for everyone but it worked for me. Thanks, Dominic Garofolo
