Heh – you beat me to it! I was editing my 6BT description to 6B, hit reply and saw your post. Since I know for certain it’s naturally aspirated and a 5.9, 6B sounds likely as you noted.

From what little I’ve read on the 6B, the common perception seems to be it’s about as bulletproof and simple as one can hope for – assuming proper care, of course. Valid observation?

Thanks much for your detailed comments, Rob. Much appreciated. I’ll follow your advice and report back.

    Thanks, Rob – I’ll fetch some Tru-Blu.

I’ll try it everywhere first, but I do have a couple joints that may need epoxy for the reason you mentioned – orientation. Seems like there’s always that valve or elbow that feels too loose when oriented correctly, but too tight to get another turn out of.

    Thanks, Rob.

Can’t believe I didn’t think of that before. Basically, I’d just planned on swapping out the Racor 500 for the double double in the current engine hold location, assuming it was there for a reason. I could certainly remove the Racor completely, splicing the fuel line together.

There is indeed, a ton more space by the tanks under the cockpit than in the engine hold. The double double would easily fit there and actually be much easier to service.

If I’ve not exhausted my quota of dumb questions…is there any reason one wouldn’t want a long fuel line run from these new filters to the engine? Currently, the Racor 500 is within 24″ of the last chance, on-engine Yanmar filter. Moving the double double filtration setup under the cockpit would increase that fuel line run to 12-14′.

Well Tony…I gotta live with what I have, crap or otherwise. Engine runs beautifully and I can’t justify doing anything other than keeping it running while I own the boat. Now…when our upgrade to a Nordic 32/37 happens in a couple years, I’ll definitely bend your ear on those. All eras we are interested in are Cummins equipped.

Rob – thanks much for the pointer to Bayshore Marine. Prompt response, very knowledgeable on the small Yanmars and they got me sorted ASAP. They’re my new go-to source for Yanmar maintenance items.
