August 18, 2020 at 2:06 pm i seem to have the temperature creep problem solved….but now a new issue popping up on the same engine. When cold the engine idles well, when hot i get a pretty significant “misfire”. looking at the tach I can see a 25+ rpm “miss” as the engine is idling. If I bump it up to 1000 rpm it smooths out. no smoke once the engine is warm…at idle or at high rpm. Almost seems like water in the fuel. The starboard…

June 30, 2020 at 3:13 pm twin 1989 6BTA5.9 250 HP CPL 953, 1760 hours Having a temp problem on port engine. Coolant temp creeps up as I run, If I run about 2200, the port engine temp will gradually increase to 175. At 2250 it will creep to about 180 and at 2350 it creeps up to 185 or so and then I’ll pull throttles back and it cools off. Very repeatable so I don’t think this is a gauge/sendor issue. Stbd. engine runs about 165 and will stay there all d…

August 16, 2020 at 5:25 pm That is great news! It is very important that we ALL follow up on our threads. Others will use these threads to search and help troubleshoot future problems. We are fortunate to have people like Tony and Rob (and others) that give out free advice. Marine Diesel knowledge is probably the most expensive knowledge one could acquire.

June 16, 2020 at 1:58 pm 1989 Cummins 6BTA5.9M 250 HP. CPL 953. twin engine boat. port engine I have a fuel leak somewhere on the injection pump/injector line connections. ran a shakedown cruise and everything seemed to be running well. max RPM on both engines…2675 RPM. no smoke, nothing out of the ordinary. Both engines ran about 165 degrees ( I have Tony Athens 165 deg thermostats). got back to the dock and went down to the engine room and found diesel al…

July 2, 2020 at 9:10 am thought i had the leak problem solved but running for about an hour with an oil absorbent pad under the pump I would estimate maybe a half an ounce or so stain on the absorbent pad. So I pulled the pump again and replaced all the banjo bolts and crush washers. Just took another ride and still leaking but I have no idea where from. On top of that, I now have an idle roll of 100-125 RPM at low idle and higher idle(1300 RPM). This BTW is the sa…

June 24, 2020 at 10:05 am I have older Cummins 6BTA5.9M, 250HP, CPL 953 engines. I need to replace the raw water pump. Couple questions: 1. Can I replace the pump or do I have to replace the pump and drive gear? 2. What model pump should I be using. Not sure what is in there now but I know I use the 15000K impellers Thanks for your help!

June 16, 2017 at 4:54 am I have a 31 ft. Boston Whaler sportfish with twin 1989 Cummins 6BTA5.9M engines. Engines have about 1750 hours. 250HP, CPL 953. Three years ago I had a turbo seize up which was replaced by a Cummins tech. A year after that one, the other turbo did the same thing. Cummins tech replaced that one as well. Both failures occurred after a winter in storage. The boat is always laid up for winter for about 5 months. Before starting the engines i…

August 14, 2017 at 3:01 pm Hey Tony Have the boat running now and seems to be running well with one exception. seems I have a small coolant leak at one of the head bolts. It’s small and I’m not using much coolant but want to fix that. Big concern obviously is head gasket… but hoping a retorque of the head will take care of it. Just wondering what your procedure is for re-torqueing the head. Do you loosen all head bolts and then torque in recommende…
