    • Yanmar 4LHA-STP idle vibration

July 31, 2020 at 5:38 am I currently have a Boston Whaler 31L, with twin Cummins 6BTA’s. I’m looking at buying a Mainship 34 Pilot with twin Yanmar 4LHA-STP’s, with 1100 hours on them. When I took it out for sea trial, I noticed that the Yanmar engines vibrate a lot more at idle than my Cummins engines. They are smooth running at cruising speed. This is my first experience with the Yanmar engines, and I was wondering if it’s normal? I know…

August 1, 2020 at 8:19 am I think Yanmar typically uses softer engine mounts than Cummins. If there is any inherent vibration the Yanmar will tend to rock-and-roll a bit more, while not transmitting that motion as strongly to the boat. I had Yanmars for years before the Cummins I have now.

    • Oil pressure gauge issue on new gauge panel.

April 11, 2020 at 1:51 pm I made a new instrument panel for my Boston Whaler 31L, and everything seems to work except the oil pressure gauge. The boat has twin Cummins 6BTA – 315 HP engines, with single station oil pressure sending units. I know there are a couple of different types of sending units for different applications, and I assume it’s a compatibility issue, as I’ve double checked the wiring, and its the same issue on both engines. When I tu…

April 12, 2020 at 1:01 pm If you are trying to using the Cummins (PCB) alarm board, you are in trouble–The alarm board uses the proper senders just like the gauges — In so many words, it will not work as it is trying to interpret the same resistances for oil pressure and for coolant temp..

    • Potential fuel filter issue

This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

April 17, 2018 at 4:39 am I’m in the process of modifying the filters on my boat, to a 2 stage system, per the “filtration the Seaboard way” article in Tony’s Tips. I’ve mentioned it to a couple of knowledgeable diesel guys, and they caution against it, due to the possible restriction of flow feeding the injector pump. My boat has 2) 6BTA 5.9 M3 engines with mechanical injector pumps (factory reman in 2007, with about 900 hours on them). …

April 19, 2018 at 5:30 pm Lars, you did yourself right by knowing what you were being fed was suspect and then coming here. Trust me, there would be A LOT of unhappy boaters (recreational and commercial) out there if the SMX DD setup did not perform as advertised.. Keep us informed as to your progress, maybe some pics too, and any others info or guidance you might need along the way..

    • WIF sensor wiring

April 9, 2018 at 11:22 am I’m in the process of converting my garbage Racor fuel filters to the 2 stage system from “Filtration the Seaboard way” . I will have a FS1218 primary and a FS19596 secondary filter. My boat (new to me in Nov. 2017) is a ’99 Boston Whaler 31L, with twin 6BTA 315 HP engines. I currently have Racor WIF indicators on the dash, but I’m replacing the entire dash with new gauges, etc., and I’d like to get rid o…

April 10, 2018 at 4:30 am Hi Corey, Thanks for the reply. I figured that it had to be something more complicated than a normally open contact, but it never hurts to ask. I may play around with the old Racor sensors, once I remove the old filter system, and see if I can figure it out. If I do, I’ll post my findings here. Thanks again!

    • Tachometer pulses per revolution

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byLars Larsen 6 years ago

December 2, 2017 at 8:37 am I recently purchased a 90’s Boston Whaler 31L, with twin 6BTA 5.9 engines. The gauges are a little dated, so I’m going to build a new dash panel with 2 new tachometers. The engines have the magnetic flywheel pickup for the tach pulses. Does anyone know how many pulses per revolution (flywheel gear teeth) there are on engines? Also, on a side note, Thank You to Seaboard Marine for all of the information that you supply on your webs…

December 3, 2017 at 10:01 am Thanks, Rob, I’m building a new panel with Faria Kronos gauges, and I don’t believe that they use dip switches. They have a small LCD readout on the gauge face for calibration. Still a work in process – just picked up the boat this fall. I told the former owner if he ever wanted to sell it, I’d buy it, and he called about 2 months ago and said he was selling. I spent some time on the boat out in rough water with h…
