I recently purchased a 90’s Boston Whaler 31L, with twin 6BTA 5.9 engines. The gauges are a little dated, so I’m going to build a new dash panel with 2 new tachometers. The engines have the magnetic flywheel pickup for the tach pulses. Does anyone know how many pulses per revolution (flywheel gear teeth) there are on engines?

Also, on a side note, Thank You to Seaboard Marine for all of the information that you supply on your website. I’m very familiar with diesel equipment, but new to marine diesels, and after reading “Tony’s Tips” I decided to inspect the after coolers. Glad I did – one came apart fine, the other came apart with a 20 ton press. I just purchased a complete unit from Seaboard. When I asked the previous owner when he last had the after coolers serviced, his answer was “what”s an after cooler” I also upgraded to multi stage fuel filtration, as recommended on the web site.

    Tach Pulses

    Thanks, Rob,
I’m building a new panel with Faria Kronos gauges, and I don’t believe that they use dip switches. They have a small LCD readout on the gauge face for calibration. Still a work in process – just picked up the boat this fall. I told the former owner if he ever wanted to sell it, I’d buy it, and he called about 2 months ago and said he was selling. I spent some time on the boat out in rough water with him, and I was impressed at how well it handled it. I’m just getting started with it, but I’ll post pictures as I get things done. I am planning to add the priming bulb circuit on the fuel filter modification. The exhaust is stock….. for now, but it ‘s on the list.

    Thanks again for the info!

    159 teeth on a B flywheel

    Closed Dip Switches = 1,2,4,5,6,7,9,10

Sounds like your going in the right direction on things, you’re boat was lucky to find you! Post some pics of your new fuel filtration setup? Where you able to squeeze in the squeeze bulb setup. Probably a tad tight with twin 6BTA’s in that 31. How safe is the exhaust? Pictures of all would be good..
