    • 1999 Cummins 6BTA 5.9 Transmission Oil Change

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 10 months ago

July 23, 2023 at 8:18 am I need to change my transmission oil on my twin Cummins 5.9 engines. I have the quick drain feature.Ā  Questions: What is the capacity for transmission fluid? What type of fluid do I need, is ATF from auto parts store ok? What other items should I be checking, is there a filter/strainer I need to check? Is it easy as it sounds, just drain and refill?

July 13, 2023 at 2:20 pm Just replaced the stbd turbo drain line on my 1999 Cummins 6BTA 5.9 M3 330 HP, and while running the engine to check for leaks noticed that I had ATF leaking out from the transmission’s filter cap.Ā  No leaks on the drain line – yippee for that. Quick check of the repair/parts manual had me grab my 6mm Allen wrench and get into a boat yoga position to tighten the cap.Ā  That didn’t help (it was already ‘closed to the stop&#…

July 16, 2023 at 4:00 pm Was able to disassemble the filter today … just got a better angle on the screw and things came apart easily.Ā  Thanks for the info – another routine maintenance item I can add to my “don’t have to pay for this to be done” list.

    • Coolant Drain Valve – 6BTA

This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byStephen Oliver 3 years ago

January 5, 2021 at 10:47 pm Hi Guys Has anyone changed out their coolant drain plug for a small ball valve and then a larger hose tail to a hose for draining easily and cleanly? I’m thinking of using a brass 1/8npt ball valve but unsure if it will take the temps and survive. Just thinking ahead as i’ll be replacing the alternator shortly and was thinking of doing the thermostat at the same time. SB engine is a pig to drain cleanly so i end up dumping it in the …

April 17, 2019 at 11:00 am Hello All, I would like to start performing my own oil changes. I am at the 75 hour mark since the last change. Engines: Cummins 6BTA 5.9 330hp @ 2800 Hours: 1,051 for each engine I have been trying to identify a step by step process for the oil change protocol, but have not had any luck. For example, what hardware are you using to extract the oil? I have located various oil change kits on West Marine and Amazon etc…, but I wanted to s…

December 27, 2020 at 6:31 am Manifold block can be found at McMaster Carr. Parker hose is not really necessary but I believe in fabricating for the long haul and peace of mind, not just something to get by. I too remove the fuse when not in use, just a little insurance. Sorry so long in replying, just today found that notifications of postings have been going to junk mail.

    • Strange pieces

This topic has 8 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 3 years ago

July 16, 2020 at 9:54 am Last year I noticed these small pieces of ‘plastic’ under the front of the starboard engine, 1999 Cummins 6bta 5.9l 330hp. Nothing like this under the port engine. Port – #45766133 Starboard – #45764308 I cleaned them up and put in new absorbent pads and had new belts installed. I now see more pieces, the mechanic I use doesn’t know what they are. About to head out on an 8 week vacation and would like to know if…

July 23, 2020 at 4:09 am Right you were confusing tensioner vs idler. Tensioner is replaced with new, not just a new shim. Itā€™s not expensive nor difficult. Idler pulley upgrade is something else worth searching on the website and forums here.

June 23, 2020 at 2:53 pm I thought changing my transmission oil/filter was going to be an easy job, however I don’t appear to be able to get the ‘plug’ back into the hole in the transmission. Everything online I’ve seen says just place in hole but the o-ring won’t fit. Do you have to fit the filter to the ‘plug’ before putting into the hole? Why is there a tighten and loosen component to this? Does the ‘plug’ com…

March 9, 2020 at 10:23 am I purchased my ‘oil change’ pump from https://2k-pumps.com/ Specifically https://2k-pumps.com/marco-up3-oil-gear-pump-for-lubricating-oil-12-volt-16402012/ I see they are on sale for $207 at the moment.  Much cheaper to purchase from Italy than USA distributor. They ship from Italy with $15 worldwide shipping cost. Very pleased with they customer service, considering purchasing a fresh water pump to replace existing noisy diaphr…

    • Impeller blades missing, an issue?

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byGraeme Walker 5 years ago

September 27, 2018 at 4:00 pm I’ve just taken possession of boat with twin Cummins 6BTA 330HP engines. During the seatrial the Cummins rep had a look at the impellers and wouldn’t let us go out without replacing them, the port impeller was very chewed up and missing 4-5 blades. Sea-trial went well and engines go to WOT without issue, no smoke on start, ~700hrs. I asked the rep whether the rubber impeller blades would be an issue as they are now floating around…

September 28, 2018 at 8:15 am Appreciate the comments, will run only at hull speed for now, only went at WOT for seatrial for brief period. I have maintenance plan scheduled for the winter season, it’s getting longer. I’ve been ‘grunting’ my way through your tips, very informative. Thanks.
