Depends on the transmission, do you have photo of nameplate?

My 1999 6BTA with ZF-80A takes 5.5 litres each, ATF Dexron III, replace every 250 hrs or once per year with Filter #3312-199-031.

With the quick drain feature it easy, getting to the filter is another story.Ā  SBMar has video on how to install.

To get it off you need to continue unscrewing after the tab contacts the housing.Ā  a stupid design if you ask me, especially since it is likely always in an inaccessible area.Ā  You should be able to lift the entire unit out but not via the cap.Ā  The entire unit can be disassembled but don’t bother.Ā  The filter is attached via snapping onto the lower o-ring and the whole unit needs to be reinstalled as a unit.Ā  Reinstalling you just turn the Allen key the other direction, doesn’t feel like it’s a positive engagement and never looks like it’s properly installed.

Sounds like you have pressure in the transmission and/or it is overfilled with ATF.Ā Ā  See Tony’s tips on how to measure fluid level depending on the version of dipstick.Ā  I’ve never had mine leak there and always change fluid at 200 hrs or 1 year including new filter.

    Good luck!

Any chance you have a picture of this arrangement? Thanks.

I used a Marco UP3/OIL-R and got directly from Marco in Italy, they had $15 world wide shipping. This model has a reversal switch and has brass helical gears used for the pumping. I just tied it into an electrical connection and remove the local line fuse to prevent turning on inadvertently. Running all the hydraulic hoses so they look good took most of the time. I see that SBMar now has a ZF drain hose, will have to investigate that next year, hadn’t hooked up the transmission drain at this point.

I think I’m confusing SB updated idler pulley with the belt tensioner. Will order shortly.

Cummins parts dept is telling me I can’t just order the shim but rather have to order the entire belt tensioner, is that correct? Do you sell just the shim? I know you have an updated tensioner but I believe my engine is of a vintage that this wasn’t a problem. I have the metal belt cover. Thanks.

Thanks, I’ll request the mechanic to replace them asap so we can get on our vacation.

Thanks, that sure looks like what I have. So, without being flippant, is it critical? Should I have it replaced asap or can it wait? Not entirely sure what the shim does. Thanks.

Uncle_Bob over at BaylinerOwnersClub.org gets credit for pointing me to this video.

That would work also, I only put heat on for 3-5 seconds and used a large pipe wrench to hold it.

I finally got it apart with a new 6mm hex socket and applying a little heat; going to boat to complete the job. Hope the other is easier as it is even harder to get to. Will put some ‘stuff’ on hex threads to make it easier next time. Thanks for help.

Yes it does, however I did not attempt to install that assembly, I dropped the filter in then tried to fit the cap. Will be going to boat shortly to try again.

I have been trying to get the entire assembly, with large o-ring, installed as an assembly.
    I found this video that shows it should be disassemled before installation;

Makes sense but I can’t get the assembly apart, letting it soak overnight.
    It’s a pain on a limited access 4788.
The documentation doesn’t mention having it disassembled.
Still wondering if I should use ATF or 15-40W motor oil.

I made up my own oil pump, yet to install however. Used a Marco UP3/OIL-R oil pump and added fittings for engine+transmission x2 plus generator, ~$300 so far. Plan is to mount to a piece of Starboard and then bolt to convenient location in lazarette. I stole this idea from ‘mlewis100’ over at BaylinerOwnersClub.org.

Appreciate the comments, will run only at hull speed for now, only went at WOT for seatrial for brief period. I have maintenance plan scheduled for the winter season, it’s getting longer. I’ve been ‘grunting’ my way through your tips, very informative. Thanks.

I should have mentioned this is a fresh water boat and has been well taken care of except for this single item. Generator impeller also had to be replaced, I suspect because previous owner put very few hours on engines over the past 10 years. Thanks.
