    • Engine Anodes and Freshwater Flushing

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byfirehoser75 3 years ago

August 9, 2020 at 4:28 pm I have been freshwater flushing my engine and generator (Cummins 6BTA and Onan) since I have owned the boat (4 years now), including leaving freshwater with a mixture of “Salt Away” in over the winter (no freeze issue here). Steve D’Antonio, on another forum, has recently stated that once a zinc anode is immersed in freshwater it forms a coating and will no longer function properly without being taken out and cleaned off. I hav…

August 10, 2020 at 5:01 pm Thanks Tony. I will definitely keep up the freshwater flushing. I am a bit unclear why my external HX corrosion can be from my ER environment. I use a Wolverine oil pan heater (all winter and whenever at dock in summer). In the winter I run a dehumidifier (in the boat with hatches open) as well, and the ER humidity never exceeds 60% and temps never go below about 50 degrees F. Summer is warmer temps, and about the same or a bit more humidity. I …

    • Minor Turbo Cleaning

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

September 27, 2019 at 3:13 pm I have a small coolant leak where the turbo bolts on to the exhaust manifold. It only leaks above 2200 rpm and even then only about 1/8 cup (or less). I am replacing that gasket to stop the leak, so both the exhaust elbow (new in 2017 not a doomed to fail unit) and the turbo have to be removed. I have an Envirovent system and also only use 13 liters of oil in my oil pan (6bta – 2002). My question is how do I do a basic (without disassembly…

September 28, 2019 at 8:13 am Your exhaust riser is 100% safe and your turbo is fine–Don’t touch the exhaust outlet side.. Your could clean up the outer turbo face by block sanding to give it a clean smooth gasket sealing surface. Use never-seize on the mounting hdw threads. Clean the air side side by removing the big clip and tapping off the air housing. Clean all with spray brake clean or Lacquer thinner using a paint brush.. Easy to do while the turbo is ON th…

    • Engine Room Temperature

This topic has 4 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byfirehoser75 4 years ago

September 20, 2019 at 9:09 am I am looking for advice and preferably experiences from those who have installed fans/blowers in the engine room to reduce ER temperatures. Some background. I have read that engine room temperatures should never exceed 115 degrees F (mine have not) and that optimally the differential between the outside temperature and the ER temperature should not exceed 30 degrees F. So for example, if the outside temp is 68 degrees F and the ER temp is 105 de…

September 21, 2019 at 8:09 am Rob, Yes, I am measuring the temperatures while underway and the temperature is usually slightly lower when there is a good breeze out there. Tony, I will try measuring the temperature with the probe strapped to the air filter (I have your Envirovent installed). I do not run the generator while underway and would very rarely (if ever) run it after shutdown of the main. Larry, that is interesting info regarding the wide range of temperatures you …

    • Benefits of Freshwater Flushing

This topic has 20 replies, has 9 voices, and was last updated byJavier 5 years ago

October 27, 2018 at 2:02 pm In the last while, there has been some discussion on the forum where the benefits of freshwater flushing have been debated. I am no expert and often seek help from the contributors here, but now, I am a big believer in freshwater flushing. This fall, I have undertaken some maintenance on my engine, including replacing the idler pulley, refurbishing the alternator, removing the fuel cooler, and doing the aftercooler. It has been 2 full summer cru…

    • DYI Aftercooler Maintenance

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byStephen Oliver 5 years ago

November 8, 2018 at 11:16 am Hi Everyone, I just thought I would post about my first time experience with removing my aftercooler for routine maintenance per Tony’s protocol. For background, I am not a mechanic, but am a “bit handy”. I did find the thought of doing this myself a bit daunting, especially as how important the proper functioning of the aftercooler is to overall engine health. However, I took the “plunge”. Removal, following sugges…

November 9, 2018 at 7:19 am Hi firehoser Nice write up and having just done mine.. pretty similar apart from my port intercooler core was stuck. I’d say to anyone, do not try and whack it out you will damage the core as I did and I had to get it repaired. Fortunately I had a mate with a big press, a lathe to knock up a tool and a penchant for Jack Daniels.. so got the core out with out inflicting further damage. once the tool is made I can keep reusing it, although …

    • Reattaching the Aftercooler

This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byJustin Riege 5 years ago

October 29, 2018 at 11:26 pm Based on a comment Tony made in a topic about using a sealant on the raw water pump, would it be safe to assume that I should use Rector Seal #5 when putting both the air side and water side hoses on to the recently serviced aftercooler? When I took the aftercooler off, I noticed that there had been no sealant used previously. Thanks for the advice, Tom

October 30, 2018 at 10:22 am My experience in the shop we typically put rector seal on the water hoses but not on the air hoses.

    • Removing the Aftercooler for Service

This topic has 14 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byfirehoser75 5 years ago

September 27, 2018 at 11:24 am I am planning on taking my aftercooler off the engine for servicing this fall. It was last apart 1.5 years ago when I had an exhaust hose overheat situation and the entire raw water system was removed and serviced by a mechanic. A new exhaust elbow was needed and now is dry coming off the turbo with the water injected well below the spill over point as outlined in the Seaboard literature. On my Cummins 6BTA 330 hp (2002) engine, there are only s…

October 3, 2018 at 8:19 am Thanks Rob. Yes, the puke bottle is just inside that stringer on the ER floor. It only collected barely enough “substance” to cover the bottom of the bottle in 260 hours of engine operation. The exhaust was done on my watch last season. I had installed Borel exhaust hose alarms and Aqualarm flow alarms right after I purchased the boat in Sept. 2016. It turned out to be a good investment, as otherwise, I would not have found the corro…

    • Engine Flushing Using Pressurized Dock Water

This topic has 6 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

September 28, 2017 at 9:57 pm My boat (new to me last fall) came with fresh water garden hose spiggots on the top covers of the Groco sea water strainers and the previous owner used them regularly to flush the 2002 Cummins 6BTA M3 main and the Onan Gen Set. However, I am worried about this. Could there be a problem pushing pressurized dock water (pressure anywhere from 50 to 100 psi) into the running engine? Also for the 6BTA, the 5/8 inch hose is ā€œflattenedā€ somewhat by the…

February 22, 2018 at 9:54 am Russ sounds like you answered your own question in that Yes you can leave the thru-hull open. After doing your flush, pull some zincs and give it a “taste test” and then you’ll know..

    • Coolant Reaction Issue

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byBill Fuller 6 years ago

October 28, 2017 at 6:21 pm I have experienced an adverse reaction in my antifreeze coolant and am looking for help. My new to me boat (Sept. 2016) developed an overheat on the exhaust hose. It turned out to be an exhaust elbow that was corroded. Caught it in time prior to turbo damage. As part of the work, the mechanic changed the antifreeze. The old antifreeze was green, but he put in Prestone Command Extended life (red). He did not flush, but did mix it with distilled …

October 30, 2017 at 7:34 am I agree with Tony. I can pretty much guarantee that you DID NOT have any sort of reaction between the 2 different coolants. The gen set already had the problem. You just noticed it when you started doing the maintenance. Bill F.
