April 26, 2019 at 1:13 pm Iā€™ve sent Tony Athens these same pictures for review, but wanted to get a thread going with my progress for all to see. Twin QSBs. ACs have been serviced 1x by a previous owner (there were 4). I donā€™t believe they removed the AC and bench serviced. Iā€™ve only done my stbd AC at the moment. Slight green corrosion on both caps. No performance issues pointing me to any problems. Caps came off easily as expected. Top zinc was mostly intact …

April 26, 2021 at 11:57 am Roky, you could always give distilled white vinegar a try too. My last aftercooler service interval was rather short so tubes weren’t bad and the vinegar cleaned them up nice.

January 19, 2017 at 8:08 am Years ago, following Tony’s recommendation, I hooked up fresh water flush fittings to my engine’s strainer and started flushing religiously. Within less than a year I noticed that the engine zincs were holding up much better; in fact after three years they are still going strong. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but Iā€™ve tried multiple searches and cannot find the Tonyā€™s Tips article on fresh water flushing. Itā€™s referenced in the ā€œmarine ageā€ article but no link and I have had zero luck finding it. Are you looking for a “how-to” ? There is no such instruction as one size does not fit all. Many many variables with some of the key components being your seawa…

May 11, 2019 at 10:17 am Hi again, to follow-up on my previous post, we had the aftercooler pressure tested at 30psi, and no leak. So there was no saltwater leak. PHEWW. The core was soldered, we had repaired some broken pipes and put it back the seaboard way with plenty of Metalube only a couple months ago. Now reopening it because I want to replace the old repaired core with a new one just received from sbmar, but was surprised that it was difficult to separate from…

May 1, 2018 at 6:15 pm Aftercooler in Cummins 6cta 450 HP Diamonds maintenance year 2001 I removed my aftercoolers for maintenance, I found out the have a small drill hole about 1 mm or 2 mm just at the side bottom of the cooler, when installed I felt the air turbo coming out. They are in the same place in both aftercoolers at the same location, see picture. Is this something original from the factory or it was done by the previous owners mechanic? Have someone notice…

November 27, 2017 at 4:24 pm Salt water is heavier than fresh water so if you open the sea cock…no,big deal. I personally leave them closed but it’s not imperative…..

November 20, 2017 at 5:31 pm Dear Seaboard Marine I have a 2001 Cummins 6 cat 8.3 I am just getting to learn Diesel engines, this is my first boat with diesel. I am reading in all your topics, you constantly talk about fuel burn, fuel consumption. November 21, 2017 at 11:28 am Thank you, Tony and Rob, for the explanation. My engines have 1,250 hours. Last time I tested Wot I was making 2,650, my Diver just cleaning the bottom and the props this week, I will check again my WOT, if not I will re-prop to make 2,750 rpm as suggested. My engines are running great, like new, they start right away, no smoke. I just cleaned all the Seawater coolers side as per your recommendation using the Alco Metalube, that was a great pro…
