    • Salt water into the turbo – any chance of engine damage?

This topic has 7 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

January 6, 2020 at 10:26 pm Happy New Year all! I finally battled with the rusted/sheared exhaust elbow-to-turbo bolts on the new boat – took the whole turbo off to get at them. It was my first chance to check the exhaust side of the turbo – a big salt water mess…… It was no great surprise after reading Tony’s Tips and looking at the exhaust setup on the boat, but I could’ve done without it! Anyway, while I’m working on a dry ris…

January 10, 2020 at 7:24 am Talk about an exhaust design from a true couch engineer.. Needs a complete resign, but luckily, it appears you have have the room. Can you send me all the pics you posted here in high res, .jpg attachments.. I’d like to add them to my “doomed to failure & result” folder……. Your turbo “innards” are right at the top of the worst I have seen–That took many many years to happen.. How long have y…

October 28, 2018 at 11:13 pm Hello all and thanks in advance. I’m about to replace my impellor in the raw water pump – do I use a sealant of some sort on the cardboard gasket? My manual doesn’t mention anything and my cummins parts guy said he thinks it goes on dry but didn’t look too sure…. My engine is a 6bt 5.9m 210hp. Thanks heaps, Dan

    • 6BT5.9M- Sea Water pump repair kit- what have I bought?

October 1, 2018 at 2:51 am Hi all- thanks in advance. Rob and Bill have sorted my fuel filtering and gearbox- now I’m all over the cooling system…. It’s Spring over here and I’m gearing up for the cruising season. The lockers are full of filters and belts and I have lashed out on the expensive but indispensable sounding ‘repair kit- sea water pump’. (Please see attached) When i opened the box there’s an impellor and gasket which I…

October 2, 2018 at 5:35 am You bought a Sherwood M-71 maintenance kit that was put together by a true couch engineer with zero clue of the inner working and design of the pump.. That “thing” you are wondering about is the main water seal, and to be honest, without a full tear down of the pump ( not for the timid minded or without the proper tools), it cannot be replaced.. We consider this pump a “throw-away” other than impeller , cam, and inner…

September 23, 2018 at 3:22 am Hi all, thanks for your help in advance – I appreciate it. I have changed the transmission oil in the new boat – ZF MPM IRM 220A serial number 91.7969C. My paperwork calls for 4 litres (4.2 US quart) of fluid, but by 3 litres I’m way past my high mark on the dipstick. Now I have it all in and have run the engine in gear for a couple of minutes the level is reading 6cm (2 3/8 inch) below the level of the top of the dipstick hol…

    • Fuel filtering – am I in danger of restricting flow?

This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byBill Desmarais 5 years ago

September 19, 2018 at 3:14 am Hello all, and thanks for a great forum. This is my first big diesel, first forum, and first post…. The information I’ve got already is invaluable . Now I’m not so worried I had to saw the end off my OEM pencil zinc when I screwed it into my OEM heat exchanger! I’ve also started fresh water flushing which makes a lot of sense – I do it with the 3.3 outboard for the tender so why wouldn’t I with the expensive e…

September 20, 2018 at 6:46 am Your choice is a good one. Keep us posted ! btw, I would have installed a SMX double/double setup in my 25 lobster boat with the single 6BTA 370….but I just didnt have the physical space so I went with a single SMX FS1000 with a vacuum gauge. I change the FS1000 annually @ +- 125 hrs. of running time…the fuel burn rate on average is 2 gals/hr. The OEM FS5285 last chance filter on the engine I change every few years. No particular sch…
