    Hi all- thanks in advance.
Rob and Bill have sorted my fuel filtering and gearbox- now I’m all over the cooling system….

It’s Spring over here and I’m gearing up for the cruising season. The lockers are full of filters and belts and I have lashed out on the expensive but indispensable sounding ‘repair kit- sea water pump’. (Please see attached)

When i opened the box there’s an impellor and gasket which I understand, but the o-ring/black-white-doughnut/ and springy thing meant nothing to me…… I opened my trusty Operation and Maintenance Manual to be told there are no user serviceable parts in the raw water pump other than impellor and gasket…..

    My questions are:

    1. What have I bought, and how do I know when to use them?

    2. There’s no instructions in the box and googling sherwood pumps for info has come up dry, so are there any suggestions as to how I access instructions for this?

    3. My parts supplier and manual suggest the gasket goes on dry- is this the go?

    My engine is a 6bt 5.9m 210hp
    Eng no. 44752807
    Dated 1992 05 13

    Thanks heaps, Dan

You bought a Sherwood M-71 maintenance kit that was put together by a true couch engineer with zero clue of the inner working and design of the pump..

That “thing” you are wondering about is the main water seal, and to be honest, without a full tear down of the pump ( not for the timid minded or without the proper tools), it cannot be replaced.. We consider this pump a “throw-away” other than impeller , cam, and inner wear plate replacements.. Going past that is way too labor intensive.
