May 16, 2024 at 4:07 pm Hi all i have a pair of Cummins 6CTA 450HP engines in my Carver 530 and was wanting to know what boost levels should i be seeing .. I have searched through the forum but have not been able to find anything..
1 ReplyMay 17, 2024 at 2:58 pm Generally about 30PSI tops. A lot depends upon how hard you run the engines and how heavy the boat is. I am not suggesting that you run the engines at 30PSI except for testing. But along with that goes what rpm are you operating at. Look up Tony’s article, Tony’s Tips, about propping and how to do it. Failure to pay attention to the propping can damage the engine.

Fuel Manifolds

December 3, 2023 at 6:47 pm Hello, I added a 2nd fuel tank to during my rehab of my 50′ houseboat. Unfortunately, the layout of the hull does not allow me to tie the tanks together as Tony detailed in his FAQs. Therefore, I am on the hunt for a fuel manifold that will allow me to select which tank to pull fuel from and I would also need it for the return fuel line. I have found various options out there, but I would like to know what the SBMAR family has seen or use…
4 RepliesMay 13, 2024 at 8:52 pm Look up aluminum manifolds made by pneumatic equipment mfgrs. Made from 2 or 2.5 square ends with many configurations for outlets from about 3/8 pipe up to I think 1″. I used to use them at work but have forgotten the names, sorry

March 30, 2024 at 7:18 am Replaced the lines. Trying to figure out best method to refilling and bleeding the air out.

Also I’ve seen the seaboard team use reservoirs for the hydraulic fluid. Where can I source the reservoir?
5 RepliesMay 13, 2024 at 8:31 pm For the model of pump: –how old id the boat? -Post some good, clear photos and one of us can likely offer some good suggestions.

6BTA-M1 shuts down and will not restart

April 1, 2024 at 5:06 am Hi – 1995 Albin 28 – 6BTA, unknown hours. We’ve had it about a year now but only put about 60 hours on it. A few months ago it died suddenly under acceleration. It restarted about 30 minutes later after several tries and seemed to run fine. Not knowing much at the time, we asked the mechanic to look over the fuel supply and he reported back that the filters were clean and there didn’t appear to be any problems. It…
9 RepliesMay 13, 2024 at 6:20 am Over the weekend, I replaced all of the fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump and replaced the return line from the high pressure pump to the tank. Replaced both filters. The first filter, Racor, had barely a teaspoon of sludge in the bowl, but the element looked fine. The second filter is metal so we can’t see what’s happening in there. I filled both filters with fuel before installing. The engine fired up after a few short…

March 19, 2024 at 4:13 pm Two mornings ago as I was performing my pre-run checks, I noticed the coolant overflow reservoir on my STBD main engine (SN:46174828) was empty. I checked the main reservoir and it was completely filled. So I started looking for external leaks but could find no evidence of an external leak anywhere. I turned to looking for internal leaks and checked the oil and transmission fluid but neither had any abnormal level or visual indication o…

QSB 6.7 Fuel Pump question
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
April 4, 2024 at 3:58 pm An acquaintance of mine made a mistake. He was changing his fuel filters and started his engine without turning the fuel feed and return lines on. He stated he let it run for about 5 seconds, noticed it sounded rough, and then again for about 10 seconds. He said he ended up with about a pint of diesel in his bilge with spray around the fuel pump. He cleaned it up, and the engine ran fine. However, he noticed a slight diesel residue at the bottom…
4 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 4:36 pm Thanks Clark, my parts book shows a breakdown of the fuel pump with three o rings, but curiously doesn’t show the shaft seal. His engine is the same as mine. We will see what happens.

6CTA Air Filters – 2 part question
This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
April 5, 2024 at 9:32 am Looking to either service or replace my air filters… SN 46309849 SBMar store states S&B Air Filters DO NOT replace Walker Air-Sep filter elements. I don’t know what a Walker Air Sep filter is. Current one has a metal end cap and some holder springs.. Second part – I highly doubt the air filter has ever been changed in the life of the boat. How much of a service item is this really for people? Is this a regular se…
5 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 2:40 pm The Walker Air Sep is intended to separate the oily vapour ejected from the crankcase from the actual air flow so the oil can be discarded without fouling the air filters s0 quickly. Seaboards’ crankcase venting is another way to do the same thing. Look it up.

Alternator overcharging

April 7, 2024 at 4:48 am I am wanting help to solve, what I understand is a very unusual problem, with a 24V Delco 22S1 alternator on a youngish Cummins 6CTA 8.3 mechanical diesel engine. It has suddenly begun to continually pump out highly fluctuating / high current into a bank of 2 x 12V, fully charged, (electrolyte SG > 1.24) lead acid / deep cycle batteries – connected in series. The Amps range is about 15-70 Amps at the idle RPM of 600. The duration of ea…
2 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 2:32 pm Tony is an expert, I am not but I agree with him. Take it to a good repair shop and if need be is get a good marine electrician down to have a go over. Just because it is a new alternator does not mean it cannot have a problem. The problem of course could lie elsewhere.

Rust in Coolant pipe
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
April 4, 2024 at 10:12 am Took the heat exchanger off my 6bta to get cleaned. Going to reinstall it with all new hoses and found the pipe leading to the thermostat to be extremely rusted. Anything I should do for this issue? Or just flush remaining coolant as much as possible and fill with new?
2 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 11:57 am If you can, take a sample of the so called coolant and send it to an oil testing lab. Yes, they do coolant testing also. Heavy rust like that says you have had seawater enter the engine which could do interior damage. Pressure test the system for leaks. Remove as much rust as you can. Then use a product such as Cummins cleaner, RESTORE, following directions for treatment AND removal/flushing. Be prepared to do it a couple of times. R…

Low power low rpm

September 8, 2023 at 12:48 pm I have a 40ft vessel with twin Cummins 6bta engines. My port engine low power/low rpm compared to Starboard. Port takes a while to get up to 2600 rpm while putting out black smoke, white starboard gets up to 3100 rpm almost as fast as you push the throttle. (The props were lowered from 22×22 down to 22×20 which allowed 3100+ rpm on both engines at the time.) Before I read Tony’s article on low power Idid the following: 1. Disas…
19 RepliesApril 2, 2024 at 7:43 am After all the items I tried, it turns out to be a simple fuel supply issue. The fuel hose from the Racor to the fuel transfer pump had a major kink. I’m sure this was self inflicted. When I removed the fuel coolers I rerouted the fuel lines to make access to the water pump ect.. easier and created a sharp bend in the fuel line. Oh well live and learn!

April 3, 2023 at 7:22 am I have a 2002 boat with twin Cummins 6BTA 330 engines. Both engines have the SMX water pumps with about 20 hours on them. The engines run at 180 – 185 temp and both engines are within 1 degree of each other. The factory props were 22×22 but i had the pitch lowered to 20×22 and the engines will run up to 2900 RPM at WOT. I usually run them at 2000 RPM for most of my boating. I want the engines to run cooler so I installed the…
26 RepliesApril 2, 2024 at 7:38 am The temp issue has been solved. Just follow Tony’s advice and it will work! I completed the following and all is good:
1. Cleaned the Aftercoolers 2. Cleaned the Transmission coolers 3. Cleaned the Heat X. (I think this was the real problem all the time) Boat runs around 160, (Such a simple fix, just had to do all the basic stuff. )

Engine Room Corrosion Inhibitor
This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
March 9, 2024 at 6:36 pm Can anyone recommend a good product to use for wiping down the engines/gears to prevent corrosion? Battling some spot rust here and there with these big temperature changes this time of year in the south. Maybe a good wipe down with some WD40 would help?
8 RepliesMarch 28, 2024 at 11:28 am The WD in WD40 stands for water displacing. It leaves very little corrosion prevention once it has dried. It was not certified for use in the Navy for that reason.

March 25, 2024 at 2:32 pm Hi all i have a 1999 Carver 530 with a pair of Cummins 6CTA 450HP engines and i am way down on speed. WOT is 2240RPMs and only delivers 16 knots … i have previously had it up to 22 knots… bottom of the boat is clean both engines have been rebuilt by Cummins… air filters all new… i am stumped on this tried trim tabs in all different positions with minimal affect… is there something i am missing..
2 RepliesMarch 27, 2024 at 5:24 am Like Clark said, close to zero infor to work with.. Have you gone thru this article and not skipped anything ?–That would be the basic way to start. https://www.sbmar.com/featured-article/understanding-low-power-troubleshooting/

QSC 8.3 No Raw Water Circulation
This topic has 10 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
March 17, 2024 at 3:26 pm I had the boat out 0f the water for maintenance for about 2 months. Installed new raw water pumps, hoses, seacocks, strainers. (New bilge). When I tried to start one of the engines, I couldn’t get water to circulate (out of the exhaust). Water is getting to the pump and to the fuel oil cooler ok but no water beyond that. It was working fine before this. I tried priming the system with water first from the heat exchanger to mitigate possibl…
10 RepliesMarch 25, 2024 at 2:40 pm I am in the process of replacing both Aftercoolers. The old ones have never been serviced. Crushed them both trying to press them out of the housing. Able to save one housing. The port Gear Oil/Fuel cooler was plugged up. Hopefully that was the water circulation problem. I’ll find out when I get it back together. Both Gear Oil Fuel Coolers tested good. 100%. So, I can re-use them. I’m waiting on Seaboard to ship me the new Aftercoole…

need to bond a t insalled for fresh water flush

February 5, 2024 at 12:40 am I am thinking of buying the fresh water t and plumbing to the back of the boat. The question cane up regarding bonding the T. I dont see a stud on the T. is it needed and if so any ideas to install a bonding wire. Thanks Rod
3 RepliesMarch 14, 2024 at 6:13 pm Speaking of the T fitting – I have removed the fuel coolers. Would that section of hose between the outlet of the RW pump and bottom of the aftercooler be a good place to “T” into for FW flushing? I only have external strainers

Air in fuel lines
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 months ago
March 13, 2024 at 4:01 am I recently started catching air in my fuel system. All component of the fuel system are less than five years old (tanks, lines, valves, etc) The Racors were not catching air but the secondary filter on the engine was. The fuel filter would be down quite a bit on the secondary. To try to narrow things down I bypassed the secondary, changed the primary to a small micron, and ran the motor. I don’t seem to be getting air anymore. My thro…
1 ReplyMarch 14, 2024 at 2:20 pm Check the filter seals between the filter body and the filter element. THey should be replaced each and every time you change filters. THey can harden a bit or take an impression from their metal contacts and unless you line those up perfectly they will will improperly seal next time. Of course the filter element must be tightened properly or maybe the seal will fail to seal fully. I don’t mean cranking the daylights out of it but a …

12v or 24v Alternator For QSC 8.3L with a 24V starter bank
This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 2 months ago
March 9, 2024 at 3:23 pm New to forum. Hope this question falls within the bounds. Have recently acquired a Nordic 44 with a 24v starter battery bank (two 12s in series) for a 600 HP, Cummins QSC 8.3L. Recently, had an alternator failure while on a trip. Replacement alternator (that a dockside mechanic put it in) was labelled 12V. Was this an error? Don’t I need a 24V alternator to charge my battery bank? Thanks, Michae
5 RepliesMarch 14, 2024 at 6:51 am The standard configuration for the Nordic Tug 44 has been 100% 24 volt since its inception about 10 years ago. (Update from the previous Nordic Tug 42). Of course these are highly custom boats so anything is possible. However, it is very likely to be a completely 24 volt system, including all engine and battery related items as well as lighting, appliances, etc.

Delete combo fuel block and fuel cooler.
This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 4 months ago
December 9, 2019 at 2:23 pm I’m in process of deleting fuel block and cooler and following advice from “Tony’s Tips” and also have reviewed the YouTube video. I am confused regarding the use of multiple fittings (5) for reconnecting the 1/2”supply and 3/8” return lines. The Cummins original set up is with reusable face seal fittings. Why not use one each of the existing 1/2” 45deg (supply) and 3/8” straight (return) fittings? These fittings are very easily removed from or…
8 RepliesJanuary 7, 2024 at 6:58 am Bill Do you happen to remember the sizes of the two fittings you used? I would like to have them with me when I go to the boat to complete the modification.
