May 17, 2024 at 2:58 pm Generally about 30PSI tops.    A  lot depends upon how hard you run the engines and how heavy the boat is.   I am not suggesting that you run the engines at 30PSI except for testing. But along with that goes what rpm are you operating at.   Look up Tony’s article, Tony’s Tips,  about propping  and how to do it.   Failure to pay attention to the propping can damage the engine.

December 3, 2023 at 6:47 pm Hello, I added a 2nd fuel tank to during my rehab of my 50′ houseboat. Unfortunately, the layout of the hull does not allow me to tie the tanks together as Tony detailed in his FAQs.  Therefore, I am on the hunt for a fuel manifold that will allow me to select which tank to pull fuel from and I would also need it for the return fuel line. I have found various options out there, but I would like to know what the SBMAR family has seen or use…

April 1, 2024 at 5:06 am Hi – 1995 Albin 28 – 6BTA, unknown hours.   We’ve had it about a year now but only put about 60 hours on it.   A few months ago it died suddenly under acceleration.   It restarted about 30 minutes later after several tries and seemed to run fine.  Not knowing much at the time, we asked the mechanic to look over the fuel supply and he reported back that the filters were clean and there didn’t appear to be any problems.  It…

May 13, 2024 at 6:20 am Over the weekend, I replaced all of the fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump and replaced the return line from the high pressure pump to the tank.  Replaced both filters.  The first filter, Racor, had barely a teaspoon of sludge in the bowl, but the element looked fine.  The second filter is metal so we can’t see what’s happening in there.  I filled both filters with fuel before installing.  The engine fired up after a few short…

March 19, 2024 at 4:13 pm Two mornings ago as I was performing my pre-run checks, I noticed the coolant overflow reservoir on my STBD main engine (SN:46174828) was empty.  I checked the main reservoir and it was completely filled.  So I started looking for external leaks but could find no evidence of an external leak anywhere.   I turned to looking for internal leaks and checked the oil and transmission fluid but neither had any abnormal level or visual indication o…

April 4, 2024 at 3:58 pm An acquaintance of mine made a mistake. He was changing his fuel filters and started his engine without turning the fuel feed and return lines on. He stated he let it run for about 5 seconds, noticed it sounded rough, and then again for about 10 seconds. He said he ended up with about a pint of diesel in his bilge with spray around the fuel pump. He cleaned it up, and the engine ran fine. However, he noticed a slight diesel residue at the bottom…

Heavy rust like that says you have had seawater enter the engine which could do interior damage. Pressure test the system for leaks. Remove as much rust as you can.    Then use a product such as Cummins cleaner,  RESTORE, following directions for treatment AND removal/flushing.   Be prepared to do it a couple of times.     R…

    • 12v or 24v Alternator For QSC 8.3L with a 24V starter bank

This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byGene Fuller 2 months ago

March 9, 2024 at 3:23 pm New to forum. Hope this question falls within the bounds. Have recently acquired a Nordic 44 with a 24v starter battery bank (two 12s in series) for a 600 HP, Cummins QSC 8.3L.  Recently, had an alternator failure while on a trip.  Replacement alternator (that a dockside mechanic put it in) was labelled 12V.  Was this an error?  Don’t I need a 24V alternator to charge my battery bank?     Thanks,   Michae

March 14, 2024 at 6:51 am The standard configuration for the Nordic Tug 44 has been 100% 24 volt since its inception about 10 years ago. (Update from the previous Nordic Tug 42). Of course these are highly custom boats so anything is possible. However, it is very likely to be a completely 24 volt system, including all engine and battery related items as well as lighting, appliances, etc.
