March 16, 2021 at 4:44 pm Just took my cylinder head to the shop because i noticed wetness in the exhaust ports. Got the call that it is cracked in multiple places and not worth fixing. Does anyone have a good part number for a complete replacement? I have a 6bta 300 with the denso pump. Thanks!

December 16, 2020 at 9:18 am I am getting ready to add both boost and egt to my 6bta 300. I do not see ports in the top of I take like shown on this site. My seems to be more like the 4bta or 6cta. I have a couple options I think. Option 1 in the picture will be the easiest to access and install. Options 2 and 3 are blocked by the injection pump. If I go option 1 I think all I need is something to make that hole to 1/8 npt. The hole looks like 1/2npt. Is that right? Can any…

December 17, 2020 at 7:43 am Look at the pic–Both are good. Are you sure you do not have a small pipe plug on top the the flat intake manifold? That looks like a super early 300 CPL 970 based on the Nippon EP9 pump .. Send me a serial number.. Can you send me some good pics from “all around” ?? tony@sbmar.com

April 8, 2019 at 9:02 pm I am about ready to install my 6bta into my 1989 26′ Boca Grande. We have replaced the stringers so we are staring with a clean slate. Need to fab and install the mounts but am trying to figure out an easy way to determine where they need to be and the angle required. Does anyone have any insight on making a template or where i could buy/rent one for ease of making motor mounts on the stringers?

June 21, 2020 at 6:26 pm Good job! Careful planning can save so much time and effort. In addition to jigging, I like to first draw the project full size on the garage floor, plan view and side view, and various sections as needed. This also helps with planning exhaust and water systems, which are often an afterthought.

April 21, 2020 at 4:41 pm I have a 6bta 300hp. I did oil change when motor was out of the boat before initial install. motor was sitting level and reading ok on the dipstick. flash forward- i installed the motor and now it is mounted nose down at about 3 degrees and i am no longer getting a reading on the dip stick. I have run the motor about 9 hours and have not seen any thing that would tell me im losing that much oil (smoke or leaks). i guess i am looking for recommen…

April 2, 2020 at 6:08 pm I am looking to ad a battery switch and an acr to my boat. Has a 6bta 300. powered with two group 31 agm batteries. wondering if this switch will be able to handle the motor amperage and alternator output. pretty sure my motor has a simple 1 wire generic alternator 65 amps if i remember correctly. https://www.bluesea.com/products/7650/Add-A-Battery_Kit_-_120A

April 4, 2020 at 11:37 am I used that exact model of ACR for many years on a sailboat for charging multiple house batteries from several sources (solar, generator, 80A alternator, charger). It worked perfectly. However, it is not intended as a parallel switch for combining batteries to provide more starting amps. Indeed, it will quickly drop out (by design) if the battery voltage falls below a set value. That will happen the instant the starter is actuated. The battery t…

    • tach reading high

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

February 10, 2020 at 8:41 am I have a smx magentic pickup installed. At idle it reads right around 950-1000. Shot it with a photo tach and it is reading 800 actual rpm. If i bring up speed to say 1500 rpm photo tach says 1400. Any input on this? Might it be a faulty sender or do i have it installed to close or to far from the fly wheel. Motor is a 6bta 300hp.

February 10, 2020 at 7:08 pm Figure out if the tach is “fine tune-able”.. If not, nothing much you can do.. If it is, then put your engine at approx 2500 RPM on the tach, get a strobe and set your tack to accurate at about that RPM.. If not “tune-able” get yourself digital tachs. Ask the forum what works best and will fit where it needs to fit… Tony

    • LH prop

November 11, 2019 at 1:11 pm so i bought a boat with a volvo penta tamd61a and unknown gear. i am repowering with a 300 cummins. The boat has a LH prop. single screw. Will this work with my cummins zf 220a? This might be a stupid question but how do i change the direction the gear rotates? (simply reroute the shift cable) or does it need a whole different gear? thanks for the help.

November 12, 2019 at 9:26 am Depending on the controls you have and how many stations it might be just a matter of swapping the imput from the controls. I have the exact thing going on. The boat has a l/h prop and I’m looking for a used prop. A lot more r/h props out there. Seems lefties there are always less. Its a single station with mechanical controls so its pretty easy to do

September 10, 2019 at 8:30 am I am getting ready to install my 6bta 300 with zf220a. I am wanting to replace the seals and address what appears to be a minor leak between the casing pieces. The shop wants ~1100$ to do the job. Is this something that I can do myself if I am mechanically inclined? Are there any special tools specific to the zf I would need or would I be able to get it done with the mechanics tools I have?

February 9, 2019 at 2:17 pm I just purchased a 1999 6bta 315 for my boat. I am trying to find the serial number but am lost since there is not data plate. I need some help identifying where the sensors are and how to install the harness. It has a brand new set of Cummins gauges. Any help is appreciated. I have a video of it running. Will get some pictures of the sensors that are on it tomorrow. Thanks
