• QSB 6.7 Alternator Pulley Issues

This topic has 6 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 7 months ago

October 2, 2023 at 5:13 am I have been fighting stretchy belt noise on my port QSB 6.7. I replaced what I thought was a defective fan hub and the noise diminished. I replaced an alternator with suspect bearings and the noise didn’t change. Finally, I bought a Dayco laser alignment tool (referenced in the Cummins manual as 93874). The vibration damper and fan hub pulleys lined up perfectly. However, the Seaboard replacement alternator pulley was off by one pulley gro…

    • Setting Elbow Stanchion Tension

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated bybdunigan 1 year ago

January 20, 2023 at 7:17 am Attached is a picture of the elbow support system on my Sabre 42 with QSB6.7 units and Zeus Pods. The elbow maker (DeAngelo) opted to use a ‘strap’ system for the elbow stanchion support. I was told that, when properly installed, the stanchion should ‘push’ up against the strap/elbow instead of a more neutral tension. Has anyone else heard this? Should the stanchion push up, if only slightly, against the elbow?

January 20, 2023 at 8:10 am Thank you, Tony. I will use ‘zero’ load as the standard. The water level at the dock is 13″ below the bottom of the elbow at the turbo exhaust flange. Tested this in the past. Not ideal but at least better than the 12″ minimum (if I have my facts straight).Ā I don’t think the water level gets up into the hump hose. Rather it sits in the FRP tube. In the attached photo, the water level is 2-3″ above the top of …

    • DeAngelo Elbows on Sabre 42

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byBill 1 year ago

October 26, 2022 at 6:00 am I am looking for comments on the exhaust architecture on a Sabre 42 with QSB engines and Zeus Pods. The DeAngelo stainless elbows have been suffering premature cracks at the welds. The attached pictures show the elbow leaving the exhaust flange, turning down 120 degrees. A 6″ long hump hose is attached. On the other end of the hump hose is a 6′ FRP tube that runs to the exhaust outlet on the pod. A ‘strap type’ stanchion …

October 26, 2022 at 3:45 pm No, two different alloys. Ā But both good for high temp and high corrosion environments. Ā

Anyway sorry to distract from your original question, which Iā€™m not qualified to answer. Ā

    • Engine Flush Question

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byBill Desmarais 1 year ago

September 6, 2022 at 5:33 am I now flush my twin QSB6.7 425 units after each run…5-7 minutes each. SB flush caps on the sea strainers. I have noticed that the cool fresh water really cools the heat exchanger and after cooler.Ā Is there any chance this quick swing from hot to cold can stress/damage/crack these components?

September 16, 2022 at 7:16 am I freshwater flush my QSB 5.9 480 after each use. The engine is generally shutdown 20-30 mins before flushing. I cannot see in my mind’s eye why a 30 degree difference in water temp coursing through the SWAC side of the engine could be create a thermal issue. I can’t sleep if I don’t freshwater flush after each use. šŸ™‚

    • Strainer Flush Fitting Questions

This topic has 10 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated bydonald roth 2 years ago

April 5, 2022 at 12:55 pm My set up: twin QSB6.7 380 with SB flush fittings mounted to engine intake strainers. Sherwood pump P2708 w/ 27000K impeller. Flush fittings just installed. To be tested shortly. I have watched the SeaBoard video on ‘How to Perform an Engine Flush’ and have a question regarding the recommended method of leaving the seacock open and running fresh water into the strainer with engine running. The video states that I will get 80-85% fres…

April 24, 2022 at 6:24 pm Simple test of dock water supply is to start the motor and watch the hose. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
If it collapses, your supply is probably marginal, but if the hose stays round, youā€™re good to go.

    • QSB 6.7 exhaust elbow flange questions 1 2

This topic has 26 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated bybdunigan 2 years ago

March 30, 2021 at 10:07 am My tech is performing a 500 hr service on my twin QSB6.7 units installed in a 13 Sabre 42SE and suspects the exhaust elbows (DeAngelo) need replacing. He recently replaced the elbows on a similar Sabre and noticed the inner diameter of the elbow flange was slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the turbo exhaust flange. He didn’t like this fact and expected both inner diameters to be the same. When he used a QSB5.9 gasket, it matched …

May 23, 2021 at 6:07 pm Tony, thanks for the quick reply. I am amazed you are ‘online’ on a Sunday evening! Wow! I will run the ‘out to sea’ test you have prescribed sometime this week and report back. I will describe my typical usage as follows: My cruising area is the Chesapeake Bay and the ICW down to Hilton Head, SC. The majority the time, seas are less than 1′. Rarely do I see anything greater than 1.5′-2′ seas. My runs ar…

    • QSB 6.7 oil priming question

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated bybdunigan 3 years ago

May 9, 2020 at 9:55 am My boat has been on the hard for 6 months and will be splashed in late May. I have a pair of QSB 6.7 380 units. Should I prime the oil system before first start? If so, what are the best ways? Common rail units don’t have fuel shutoff solenoids. Is there a way to disable the fuel system so I can simply turn the engines over for a period of time? Or will I need to use a Melling pressurized oil tank? What is the best location to access the m…

    • Locked Turbo on low time QSB 6.7 1 2

This topic has 28 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated bybdunigan 5 years ago

August 21, 2018 at 11:15 am I bought a Sabre 42 in March 18 that had its port turbo replaced the prior June 17. This boat is a 2013 with Cummins QSB 6.7 380hp units tied to Zeus 3000 pods. 323 hours now. 272 hours at time of purchase. 237 hours at time of turbo replacement. I just received a copy of the repair invoice which reads as follows: …Port engine has lack of power. Noted excessive oil from the after cooler condensation valve, removed the Air Sep element and i…

September 9, 2018 at 7:14 pm Tony, take a look at the pics in my posts on August 22 along with some others posted here from the same photo session. Let me know if you find these insufficient for your review. As usual, there isn’t a ton of room around the exhaust but I can certainly take more. As previously mentioned, Phil requested I remove the exhaust elbow and take shots of the exhaust side of the turbo. I haven’t been able to do that yet. Many thanks.
