    • Wwhat engine to replace 6bta 370?

This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byBill Desmarais 1 year ago

March 28, 2023 at 5:19 pm Well, the State says it’s time so I have to replace my excellent 6bta 370 with a tier 3 engine. What engine would be the correct replacement. I have plenty of height but not much width in the engine room. The 370 pushes the boat at 15 knots at 2400 rpm.Ā

March 31, 2023 at 5:57 am There must be thousands of boats on the water that will need to upgrade from Tier I to Tier III. There will be a bonanza in engine sales and replacements.

    • ZF 220a life expectancy

August 8, 2020 at 8:38 am I have a Cummins 6bta 370 with a ZF 220A gear. The boat was built in 2001 and had 1,000 hours when I purchased it 6 years ago. Since then I have put about 3500 additional hours on it with fluid changes at recommended intervals. It has always chattered at light loads but it seems to be a little noisier this year. How much life can I expect out of it. Rebuild or replace?

August 8, 2020 at 2:32 pm Thanks for the reply. Tony, you replaced the torsional coupling when you swapped out the gear to the engine I purchased from you. I pulled the strainer and plug when I changed fluid in May. The magnet only had a tiny bit of gray fuzz and the screen was clean. It sounds like this thing should last a while longer.

    • Exhaust insulation

February 13, 2019 at 4:55 pm After learning (from this site) that my wet exhaust was configured incorrectly I built my own for my 370 6bta. I had a shop way up North do the insulation. They used fiberglass with sewn covers. After three years the stitching on the covers is coming loose and the fiberglass insulation is beginning to leak out. I temporarily wrapped it with fiberglass exhaust tape but I want something that is permanent. Any suggestions? This would only be the dr…

October 18, 2018 at 2:34 pm I installed a reman 6bta370 this spring along with a new gauge panel. I am having an issue with the starter button. Sometimes, when I press the starter button nothing happens. It has always started on the second attempt though. I have checked for any loose wires but everything seems tight. So far this is an intermittent problem.

October 18, 2018 at 3:39 pm Tim, try to “jump” the mag switch and bypass the key circuit to see if its something past the mag switch / starter… if it starts every time without issue, then you have an issue somewhere external to that such as the key/button… something is loose or corroded… Pic of where to “jump” on a mag switch attached… PS – The two small terminals on the mag switch is where 12V from the keyswitch comes&…

    • ZF 220A inspection

July 23, 2017 at 7:51 am I have a ZF gear on my 6bta 370 with about 3500 hours. I am not having any problems other than gear whine that has been there since I got the boat (1,000 hrs). I cannot afford mid season breakdowns and I am curious if it would be good to remove the transmission and have it inspected during my off season.

    • Engine running cooler?

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

July 9, 2017 at 8:30 am I have a 6BTA 370. The water temp gauge reads about 10 degrees cooler than it used to. Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly when this started. I removed the engine last year and unplugged the sending unit at that time. I keep current on all maintenance and there has been so significant change in the cooling system. What is the best way to check the gauge for accuracy?

July 9, 2017 at 1:06 pm Single engine I presume.., so a gauge/sender swip-swap is not an option. Then simplest thing is to use an infrared temperature gun and shoot the head right next to the factory sender. It should be a few degrees less than actual coolant temperature.

    • 6bta 370 questions

December 23, 2016 at 11:40 am I have a 2001 Downeast style boat with a single 6bta 370. The boat has fiberglass fuel tanks. The warmest seawater temp we get here in Northern Cal is about 65 degrees. Would it be safe to remove the fuel cooling system to obtain better access to the raw water pump? How warm would the fuel going into the fuel tanks get?The boat idles for long periods sometimes while fishing. Ā Second question. Can I run the engine at idle with a garden hose hooke…
