DavidParticipantI would appreciate any help with this problem. I have smart craft electronic controls. reverse does not initially always engage on port engine when control is put in reverse . If I shift from reverse back to Neutral a couple of times it works. Tried switching solenoids, no difference. If I turn manual override screw under solenoid cover always works. Any tips would be helpful.

Thanks Tony. I do plan to take it apart to get to a final resolution. Giving it a whack was the short term fix when offshore or backing down a fairway to dock. I’ll get a better picture of the configuration on the transmission.

I need much better pics–Look at the attached
Next–Until YOU are willing to look deeper and take things apart on the gear, hitting it will not fix the issue..

September 9, 2018 at 5:41 pm #36939Similar problem on QSB 5.9 425 / ZF280
Similar problem with my PORT 2012 QSB 5.9 425 / ZF280, 1260 hours. If I give the reverse valve/solenoid a couple of whacks with the box end of a combo wrench, it works again for a while. It could fail in the middle of backing down on a fish or docking. Give it a couple of whacks and works again. Haven’t had a chance to take it apart to see if there is debris in the screen or swap solenoids to see if that is the issue. Had it happen once for the forward gear on the starboard motor so I assumed the solenoids were starting to fail. All connector feel tight.

Another thing to check– Remove both solenoids and clean the screens.. Swap the solenoid themselves and when you tighten the top piece, leave them slightly loose so they could be twisted with some light pressure. Grease all lightly before you re-install..

What’s with that 110V cordset running across the beltwrap area of the front of that engine? Was that photo taken while some work was ongoing?

Curious—Was the vessel re-powered with used engines? They were built in 2007……………Hours are low but it looks like they have seen their share of salty air for close to 10 years ( at least the gears valves do. It would be a good idea to start using something like WD-40 to keep thing clean where you see saltwater damage.
Anyway. you need to be hands-on enough to remove to solenoid coils and inspect the wires going to them– You’ll need a 5mm allen and a small phillips to take it all apart————– All plugs and wire connections here & thru-out the entire engine & gear harnessing need to cleaned & lubed with a petroleum based di-electric like WD-40 or the like…. You might swap coils too.
Start with that.

DavidParticipantHere is the pics and info you asked for.
The boat is an 88 academy Yacht canyon
40. Repowered in 2012 with qsc8.1.Relativly trouble free. Boat has veem
interceptor props and turns 2570 light at about 32kts. the engines have 1700 hrs.
I just finishing after coolers and heat exchangers using your kits, video and pictures. When STB. control is put into
Reverse it intermittently doesn’t engage when applied. The light is not on at solenoid plug. Leaving it in reverse
The connector does light up If I disconnect it from the solenoid. I think I’m looking for high resistance but don’t know
where to look.February 22, 2017 at 7:03 pm #15631

David,
ZF gear shifting Issues:
#1————————–I need to “SEE” good pictures of the gear and shifting valve assembly
#2———I want to SEE all the rest inside your engine room, & I want to see your helm station & controls
#3—————I want to know all of the history of the boat & engines along with ENGINE serial numbers..
Pics need to be “clear & in-focus” …. Post here, but you need to send to me direct in HIGH res..
