I just wanted to greet everyone.

I just bought my first Diesel. An Albin 28 2005 model flush deck powered with a 315 yanmar. I wish I could have gotten a cummins B series, but that just isn’t available in the flush deck design I wanted.

That said, I will be reading and researching as much as possible to keep this engine working well for as long as possible. It is the original engine, and had about 900 hours on it. It was in fresh water most of its life, and then it moved to Florida for a couple of years where it was flushed with fresh water after use.

Now….it is working commercially as a fishing boat, 10 – 12 hours per day, 6 – 7 days per week, going between idle and 7 knots, 98% of the time.

There are any boat projects on the go, as I learn the vessel, but one of the first is to reduce the pitch of the prop as I am just getting about 3600 rpm at WOT. I did get 3700 rpms measured on the tach when I sea trialed the boat, and the engine survey done the year in front showed the true rpms seemed about 150 more than the boat tach. Either way, the boat needs to be propped for its current sea conditions and additional weight with coolers and ice, etc.. I think a 2″ pitch drop should do it.

Additionally, looking at changing from the Racor 900 series fuel filter to one of the recommended multi filtrations setup from SBMAR. I don’t have any issues now, but want to prevent them down the road as will probably do 2500+ hours per year.

    Hi all –

Tony asked me to post some pictures of my set up so he could see it, just as if he was standing on the boat…..and then, along with the other forum contributors, he could make sure I was set up properly. So I will post a series of pictures now.

    Thanks Rob.

Well, I will get a photo tachometer off of Amazon to verify the tachometer reading. Tomorrow I will take a swim under the boat to verify, but pretty sure the prop is a 18 diameter x 19 pitch. I have a spare with the same measurements. Unfortunately I don’t have any props I can borrow, so will have to take a guess at one that will bring the rpms up. You are correct, I do want to be meeting that 4000 rpm mark.

I wonder why my yanmar is considered a pleasure boat engine. Hopefully it will last me if cared right. I guess there are some good reasons why Albin went with it rather than the cummins in the flush deck model. You are correct that the 6BTA was too tall. I was thinking I could always raise the floor a bit to accommodate, but I would have to raise the cabin roof as well. But you are also correct about the steering, and I wouldn’t want it more difficult than it was now. At any rate, I hope I don’t have to cross this bridge for a while.

I’ve played on many boats and never did see a helm tach that read low… 2″ pitch drop will probably get you right around the 3,800 rated but you want to be 3,950 or so and get there easy.  Running 98% of the time at hull speed is your saving grace…

BTW, Albin never put the 6BTA in the flush deck, only the engine boxes.  There could always be a one-off out there somewhere but I doubt it would even fit.  When Albin went from the engine box to the flush deck they had to make the aft bunk narrower to fit the engine in the forward position of the flush deck as opposed to the engine box where the engine is further aft with a close coupled v-drive.  As it was the flush deck was know to bow steer and the 6BTA would be a good 400lbs more weight where you wouldn’t want it.  The FD’s  were mainly powered with the 6LP’s and some Volvo D6’s. ..

I should also add, that’s my boat captain in the profile pic. I own the camera so he gets to look pretty with the fish!
