    • shaft log and shaft diameter

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byDarren Kinvig 3 years ago

November 1, 2020 at 10:04 pm I have a question about shaft diameter VS shaft log diameter. I am doing a re-power. I need to increase the shaft diameter from 1 3/8 to 1 1/2 diameter. I would like to keep the same shaft log. The inside diameter of the shaft log is 1 15/16 That leaves a bit more than 3/16 clearance around the 1 1/2 diameter prop shaft. How crucial is the clearance between prop shaft and shaft log. Is this enough clearance?

November 5, 2020 at 11:49 pm Thanks for the reply. I am starting with nothing but the shaft tube/log in the boat. The strut will need to be replaced. The prop shaft that came with the boat was an 1 3/8 . I will go to an 1 1/2 shaft diameter. I was hoping not to replace the shaft log. My first time doing an inboard/v drive set up. So the extra clearance sounds like a good idea. Your shaft was so miss aligned that it was wearing at the shaft log/tube itself. Allot to le…

September 13, 2020 at 9:32 pm I have a question about Re-powering my vessel with a V-drive using a Cummins engine. I am hoping someone can help with this. The manual for the cummins engine states the engine needs to be mounted in a nose up application. Between 3 and 12 degrees nose up. The shaft that is in the boat now sits at 12 degrees. That leaves enough room for a 20 inch wheel on the shaft. The ZF V drive transmission I am planning to buy is a 12 degree transmission.…

Need to fab and install the mounts but am trying to figure out an easy way to determine where they need to be and the angle required. Does anyone have any insight on making a template or where i could buy/rent one for ease of making motor mounts on the stringers?

June 21, 2020 at 6:26 pm Good job! Careful planning can save so much time and effort. In addition to jigging, I like to first draw the project full size on the garage floor, plan view and side view, and various sections as needed. This also helps with planning exhaust and water systems, which are often an afterthought.
