    Hi,
I have an Aussie built 86 Bertram 35. Has twin factory Green Disprins- 255hp Volvo TAMD60C, Twindisc 502 with 2.00 ratio and 10 degrees down angle. Boat weighs 10.5-11.5 tonne depending on load.

    I do about 400 hours a year
    Trolling 7 knots @1150
    Cruise 16 @ 2200
    Tops out 22-23 @ 2800 WOT

Yes I know these hulls eat Hp…

One engine out and needs a major birthday so time for repower considerations. We are coming into summer here so itā€™s either a quick rebuild to get through or park it and repower with Cummins.

The following model (rebranded as Carribean) of my boat came out with 300 6bta, then 315 6bta, then 330 6bta and now they come out of the factory with 355 QSB 6.7 and 5050A boxes.

Note down under our fuel is much more expensive (currently $1.60 per litre) hence we tend to run less hp.

I didnā€™t budget on a repower For another 3-5 years, so need to either watch costs and stage it. E.g. new boxes And good runners, and do all the other stuff required, bigger air vents, shafts, fuel lines etc etc.

Or take my time and do the whole thing now.

    Thoughts…..

Consider Max HP that will fit

I just posted a note about re-powering my 38 – going from 410 HP to 720 HP and I increased top end, reduced cruise RPM with the new setup which allowed for the less wear on engines and still better performance and with slightly reduced fuel consumption.
My thoughts are that after considering possible engine packages . Pick a series that fits dimensionally and go with the highest HP in the series. You can always throttle back. Usually the weight difference between models is small – 100-200 pounds at max.
Then all you need to decide is mechanical or electronic.
Tony May have a different spin on this and I would go with his final recommendations.

    Thanks for the response Tony,

The rebranded thing was just that in NZ and Austrailia there are a lot of Bertrams that are branded as Carribeans. International Marine in Austrailia have some kind of licence to reproduce them down here. Mine was built in Aussie in 86 still under the Bertram name. Its irrelevant anyway as they are the same boat.

Drop me an email and lets talk about these options.

Not sure I understand the “re-branded” thing, but you can get the mechanical 6BTA 5.9’s at 355 BHP at 3100+ RPM or at 315 BHP at 2900 + RPM ( for propping purposes.)

.Here, we buy them as Genuine Cummins factory new NON-EXCHANGE Recons built in Mexico “as new” from the ground up.. Both would easily fit / replace your 60’s and save you about 200 lbs a side even if you were to adapt/use the old gears ( not a good idea) . If you went to modern gears, then you’d save another 60 lbs per side (ZF220A) .. New gear packages would run about $5500 USD per side.

Your 60’s were good ol’ engines but are crazy expensive to rebuild, even if you could get parts to do it..I am sure you know what I mean.

BTW, higher max HP engines do not necessarily use more fuel–It’s your throttle hand that controls fuel burn, not the engines max HP rating.

    Tony
