April 28, 2024 at 6:44 pm Hello, I have a 40 Sundancer with qsb 380’s. Would you guys recommend the use of a turbo blanket? What are the cons and pros. I know it makes the turbo more efficient.

Cummins 5.9 QSB 380 hp Temperature Alarm
This topic has 7 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 27, 2024 at 8:34 am I was sea trialing a boat we are considering purchasing and while running a short distance at 3000 RPM the overheat alarm went off and the gauge is reading 183 degrees. I am trying to understand what temperature the alarm should go off. It seems like 183 is higher than what I would expect. I would expect about 176 to 178. Question is what temperature is the alarm supposed to go off? 183 degrees is not that much over what I thought would be the n…

6CTA Aftercooler Removal and Service Issues
This topic has 16 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 18, 2022 at 8:11 am After the thorough information and write-ups from Tony and the SBMar team, and the readily available parts kits they supply, I decided to tackle my aftercoolers this year. This is my second year with this vessel, a 2001 Tiara 3800 Open with 6CTA’s, roughly 500 hours. It was previously serviced by Gorham Diesel out of the Boston area. The aftercoolers were replaced with brand new ones 4 years ago, so I am assuming that this is the first “service”…
16 RepliesApril 28, 2024 at 3:02 pm That starboard core looks like crap but maybe try pressure testing it after cleaning it incase it still holds pressure? I dont have the SMX housing (does one exist?), but I do have the SMX core on my Port Side with the original housing and no issues, pressure test passed. My 2nd year with it btw, previous owner didnt do the bench and when I went to do the bench I found corrosion and a failed pressure test

April 24, 2024 at 10:40 am Hi. 2007 vintage QSB 5.9 355hp in a 32′ Tiara Open. Found these apparent leaks on the rear of the port side motor. Second two pics are the same from slightly different angles. First is on the left rear side of the motor. What is going on and how to address? Thanks. BTW they have around 1250 hrs on them.

Trying to convert my old SC5000 to the new SmartCraft Connect
This topic has 4 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
December 14, 2023 at 11:46 pm Hey guys I’ve got the original SC5000 engine screens on my 2006 Tiara and they are pretty much toast. I’m trying to get the SmartCraft Connect Gateway that allows me to push all that data to some dedicated 7″ Raymarine Axioms instead and I’m trying to see if it’s possible. It appears the way my gauges are wired I have 2x Single SmartCraft junction boxes instead of 1x Dual engine box. Does that mean I will need to ge…

6cta Motor Mounts – How to test?
This topic has 9 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 4, 2024 at 5:15 pm Purchased this 2001 Tiara 3800 with 6CTAs 4 years ago, these were the mounts on the vessel, not sure how far they date back but I am starting to wonder if they are good or not, the left motor seems to vibrate alot more than it used to under way. Ive been reading some threads about alignment as well, anything obvious to look at or photograph to be able to tell? The props were fixed at my inspection survey, and I have not hit anything that I a…

ZF 220 housing crack
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 23, 2024 at 6:56 pm ZF 220 A gearboxes were pulled apart for bearing and seal replacement while the engines were rebuilt and an internal crack was noted in one of the housings, refer attached photos. It appears that the crack has propagated from a pilot pressure hole, does anyone have a flow diagram for the ZF 220 so I can figure out what caused the crack. I am thinking of using a rotary burr to open up the crack and TIG welding it back together then redrilling the…

Considerations for 6BTA with High-Output Alternator
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 24, 2024 at 12:35 pm Background: I’m considering removing the 12.5kW Westerbeke diesel genset from a boat that has a pair of Cummins 330B engines (2001 vintage). I want to replace the genset with a pair of Magnum Inverter/Chargers (stacked) and a roughly 48kW-Hour battery bank (LiFePO4). This will cover our requirements for 24-72 hours. When away from shore power for extended periods I want to re-charge the LiFePO4’s by replacing one or both of the exis…
1 ReplyApril 24, 2024 at 4:17 pm 1———–The alternator drive system on your 6BTA’s will not support driving an alternator output above about 60-70 AMP’s at 700 Idle RPM, or much above 180- 200 AMP at 1500 RPM.. ……….. And that is IF everything is perfect I use 13.5-13.8VDC as the bases line measured at the battery terminals And IMO, do not waste any money on any small framed pumped-up alternator just because it happens to …

What kind of filters are these? “Cleanable” airseps?

Cummins 5.9 turbo issue
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
January 9, 2024 at 12:40 pm Hi all, I am new to the circle and probably need to direct this primarily at Tony. I have a 29 foot Blackfin with twin Cummins 335 Hp engines. The starboard engine is taking longer and longer for turbo to engage and last week took 15 minutes to activate after lots of black smoke. It finally cleared and operated properly. Removed the Walker Airsep and checked the impeller which turned smoothly with no damage or movement. Do I have a exhaust gate…
3 RepliesApril 24, 2024 at 1:33 pm Hi Patrick<br />The problem is now permanent and no longer clears itself. So, hauled the boat yesterday for hurricane season and I will remove the exhaust bend to inspect the turbine, which, might be sooted up. More later

6BTA 370 Vibration in Tensioner
This topic has 6 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 18, 2024 at 9:46 pm Hi, I just completed a complete cleaning of a rusty coolant system, rebuilt the turbos while at it, and a lot of other stuff. I noticed when running again near idle one of the tensioners is vibrating visibly (maybe 1/4″). This engine also has more vibration visible on it from the coolant reservoir for example. I replaced the tensioner and idler (not upgraded idler, next time) last year (50 hrs since) with OEM parts and so not sure what…

QSB to NMEA2000
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 23, 2024 at 1:47 pm Hoping to get some help:I have a boat with twin Cumins QSB Diesel Engines. They operate smart craft (When Mercury and Cummins shared VesselView). Called DieselView 1.0.Is there a way to get this data from the engine onto NMEA2000? Would like to keep existing SmartCraft Displays AND get the data over NMEA
1 ReplyApril 23, 2024 at 2:04 pm Cummins / SmartCraft (Single or Twin Engine) NMEA 2000 Gateway This should get you there. There have been a few folks on the forum that have this working. I hope they chime in and share their experience. The search feature is still not working so trying to find the details is kinda tough right now.

Turbo oil darin elbow leak
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 22, 2024 at 8:44 am Brought a replacement turbo oil drain elbow last year to replace a leaking pitted one. Came with two gaskets. Mechanic used just one on the re install and said second was just an extra. Well it was then leaking from the fitting face and the turbo. Pulled fitting and replaced gasket once again and it still leaks same area of the marriage between the fitting face and the turbo. Should we have used both gaskets?

Heat Exchanger and Trans Oil Cooler Maintenance
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 22, 2024 at 10:36 am It has been 5 years since the local Cummins dealer serviced the charge coolers, HX and transmission oil coolers on my 1997 6CTA8.3 450 Diamond engines, and this time I am doing the job myself. I have Tony’s excellent article on aftercooler service, but what should I do to service the HX and oil cooler? I can’t seem to find articles or postings in this forum. Do these need air pressure testing like the aftercoolers? Many thanks, David…
3 RepliesApril 23, 2024 at 1:13 pm To be honest I didn’t clean them myself, but the end caps come off, so you can try in place, just doesn’t seem like something I’d want to do in place.
