December 15, 2021 at 8:48 am I was 80 miles offshore fishing for swordfish yesterday. Mid-day we had a fish on and I tried to bump the port engine forward. The throttle responded to the lever, but the transmission did not shift from neutral to forward. I ran up to the tower and took control there, and experienced the same. Port control lever did not engage forward on port transmission. ZF electronic control units in engine room did not show any codes. Reverse worked …

December 22, 2021 at 4:55 pm No such thing as a dumb question that we all can learn from.. Locked out?. Nope — most likely a temp browser issue.. I personally get dumped sometimes.. Maybe it’s my “wry humor” someone called me on recently. Tony

    • Acid flush raw water side of cooling system

This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated byfirehoser75 3 years ago

March 18, 2020 at 7:03 am I’d like to flush my QSM11 raw water cooling system with RydLyme once I put the boat back in the water. Is the procedure as simple as: Remove zincs. Reinstall zinc holder bolts without zinc. Close raw water intake seacock. Detach point where cooling raw water would be discharged through exhaust. Use bilge pump or livewell pump to push RydLyme through cooling system in opposite direction of normal flow. Exhaust outflow toward the raw wate…

September 16, 2020 at 5:53 am Kopptain, One more thought. Do you have a cooling line running from one of your coolers (gear oil cooler for example) to a dripless shaft seal? If so, that is where your water is going. That line should be taken off and plugged to avoid this (if that is the case).

    • Best lubricant to use in ZF 325-1A Transmission

This topic has 8 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byHarry Alverio 3 years ago

February 28, 2020 at 6:47 am My boat has twin QSM11 660s with ZF 325-1A transmissions. Engines and transmissions have approx 750 total hours on them. I believe it’s time for me to change the fluid in the transmissions. I purchased the boat with 350 hours on it, and the mechanic that has been maintaining the engines, transmissions etc told me that the transmissions contained a specific oil to help during the break in period. He suggested changing the transmission l…

    • Display QSM11 Data on Garmin 8600 MFDs

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byCorey Schmidt 3 years ago

May 6, 2020 at 8:33 am Has anyone displayed their QSM11 engine data on garmin screens? The screens all network using NMEA 2000. Is there an adapter available to add QSM11 data to the network? How about data from an Onan MDKAV generator? I don’t currently have data from my generator displayed anywhere. Thanks, Jeremy

May 6, 2020 at 10:48 am Yeah you have what’s called Cummins OEM architecture. It’s not easy to bridge this data to NMEA as the data protocol is NOT the current J1939 standar protocol, but rather SAE J1708. You need to search the Internet for a J1708 to NMEA 2000 translator, then piggy back on the wires going into the back of the screens to FEED the data to the translators you source. Keep the thread alive if you source a good translator… there’s…

    • oil back pressure filter

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 4 years ago

March 18, 2020 at 6:42 am If you have read my previous questions and post, you’ll know I am new at this. I have twin QSM11 670s in my boat. When running the boat back from OCMD to Baltimore via C&D canal, one dip stick popped out, causing a mess. I got that cleaned up and contained. An hour later the dip stick on the other engine popped out. Cleaned that up. Mechanic buddy is suggesting that I need to change the oil backflow filter. I cant seem to find a…

March 18, 2020 at 8:29 am #1———————————Check your oil capacity per this article.. To do it right, you need to understand OIL PAN Capacity and draining the oil pan 100% dry. Then add the proper amount if oil to your oil pan and check your dip sick markings…..Understand this is done with the boat at the dock and the engine never started nor is the oil filter touched. #2– Read this a few times…

    • Need advice on changing Props to protect QSM11s

December 13, 2019 at 3:08 pm I have twin QSM11 670s in my 44′ express sportfish. I have owned the boat for one year. I put 400 hours on the engines in the last year, and total hours are now 750. The turbo on the port side cracked in August and I had it replaced. I understand that I need to reduce the heat generated at cruising speed. I have typically been cruising at 25-27 knots at 1850 RPM burning approx 21 GPH on the port side and 19 GPH on the starboard. Port…

January 14, 2020 at 2:59 pm I had a Pyrometer I bought from Tony installed back in 2013. It was basically a screw into the exhaust elbow port, run a wire and install the gauge. Worst case it could not have been more than 1K including labor. Itā€™s fun to watch as both sea conditions change or you throttle up and down. Itā€™s also ā€œsavedā€ me in rough conditions/high load as I could quickly visualize the EGT climbing at reduced RPMs and reduce down further before I could da…

    • Tower Controls are Glitching

This topic has 5 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJeremy Bendler 4 years ago

July 15, 2019 at 1:16 pm I have a 44′ express boat with a second set of controls in the tower. Twin 2005 QSM11 670s with ZF transmissions. When I take control of the boat up in the tower the shift/throttle controls work fine. After an hour or so the controls glitch. I only control the boat from the tower while I am trolling. When trolling I have both transmissions in forward and both engines at idle speed of 600 rpm. When the controls glitch, strange things …

July 29, 2019 at 12:45 pm Thanks Tony. That will be my project for Friday when I’m back down at the boat. I purchased a new wiring harness for the tower controls just in case that is the issue.

    • Which Alternator for 2005 QSM11 670

This topic has 13 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byTom Mann 4 years ago

June 4, 2019 at 1:59 pm I believe I have a bad alternator on my QSM11 670. I’m not at the boat right now. I’d like to order a new alternator but I’m not exactly sure what I need. Does anyone know off hand which alternator I need for a 2005 QSM11 670? Dumb question but is this something that would be in stock at an auto parts store? It’s going to be a few days before I can get to the boat so I’d love to show up with the part in hand. T…
