Should the heater grid cycle on and off without the engine running? I have to cycle it on with the ignition switch three times to get it to heat a fair amount. (enough that I can feel the grid housing warming up)

Thanks for the input Rob. My boat has a planning hull and last winter I added two more trim tabs at the keel line. I can now run bow down at any speed rather than having to stand to see over the bow. Much more efficient and I no longer have to get over the hump. That said, after reading Tonys article on low speed running and your and Steves input I plan to take it to hit cruise RPMs at the end of each hull speed run.

Thanks for the info Steve. I am running 160 thermostats. My temps are the same as when running at high cruise RPM as are my oil pressures. I run at low RPMs when leaving the dock or anchorage until the temps are above 150, then slowly push it up to the cruise speed I want to run. I will read Tonys tips.

Bryan,
I totally agree with Tony that you need to go thru LOW POWER TROUBLESHOOTING step by step. However In my experience, the first thing to do is to verify that your techs are accurate. A lesson I learned the hard way.(at a cost of $5000)March 9, 2021 at 5:59 pm #111497

Make sure your tachs are accurate. If one engine is doing most of the work, it will run hotter.

By pumping the fluid back in through the drain valve, does that eliminate any air in the system so burping is not necessary? What kind of pump did you use?

When I changed the impeller on my Westerbeke generator it can with a packet of Glycerin. Very slippery stuff. I tried it on an old pump that I have in the garage and the impeller slid right in without compressing the impeller vanes. Just turned the impeller while pushing it in. I bought a bottle of Vegetable Glycerin on Amazon for about $20 I think.

Much better acceleration and very smooth. No smoke any time from idle to WOT.

Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. We went for a cruise today. here are the numbers.
RPMS GPS speed in knots
2300 15-16
2400 17-18
2500 18-20
2600 21-22WOT 2800 both engines
Bottom cleaned 5 weeks ago. With the amount of growth we get in the marina and the mussels I scraped off the down tubes for the dingy platform lift, I can only assume the bottom is due for a cleaning again.

Rob,
We did laser tach before the prop repitch. Not again after they went back on. I agree that should only need to be done once, however I will do it again to set my mind at ease that I know exactly what the repitch did. It is my understanding that the prop shop conferred with Tony to determine how much pitch to take out of the props and that each inch of pitch should increase rpms by approximately 200.Don

Ken,
The props went back on yesterday. 2″ of pitch was taken out. We went for a sea trial but I did not check rpm’s with a laser tach. We had rough seas and a 12 to 15 knot wind. Rpms (per the dash tachs) were 2825 on the starboard and 2875 on port. I will sea trial again on a calm day to get a more accurate reading, as well as with a laser tach on the engines. The engines did spin up faster and smoother with no smoke.Don

I had the same issue with my 330. Replaced the sender to no avail. Ended up replacing the sender again with a genuine Faria sending unit, and replaced the blue wire from the sender to the gauge. Cured the problem.

Ken,
I am not out of the water. Had a diver pull the props. The prop shop will be talking with Tony directly to determine what to do with my props rather than me getting in the middle of that decision. I hope to have them back on by the end of next week so we can do a sea trial and hopefully put all this behind us.

Tony,
Got the props off today. Will take them to the prop shop tomorrow and he will do a scan while I wait. I’ll have him send you the scans if he will, or I will send them when I get home.Don
