    • Heater Grid wiring 6bta5.9m3

November 10, 2023 at 9:20 pm I am doing servicing on my boat and noticed the heater grid near the top of my after cooler has two power wires attached and only one ground wire. Ā My mechanic told me that the heater grid has two elements and therefore needs two grounds. Ā One on each bolt of the backside of the heater. Ā  Any photos or videos I see of other engines show only one ground ever being used. Ā On the inside of the heater the ground wires do not appear to be joined. Ā  C…

November 28, 2023 at 10:20 am Should the heater grid cycle on and off without the engine running? I have to cycle it on with the ignition switch three times to get it to heat a fair amount. (enough that I can feel the grid housing warming up)

    • Low RPM Cruise

This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byDon Gardner 1 year ago

August 16, 2022 at 3:55 pm I have a 1999 Maxum 4100 SCR with twin 6BTA 330’s. Until the fuel prices skyrocketed I always cruised at 2400 not 2600 RPM’s. Now I am cruising at 1500 to 1600 RPM’s. Do I need to run it up to 2400 to 2600 every 8 hours to keep the engines from having issues?

August 19, 2022 at 8:43 am Thanks for the input Rob. My boat has a planning hull and last winter I added two more trim tabs at the keel line. I can now run bow down at any speed rather than having to stand to see over the bow. Much more efficient and I no longer have to get over the hump. That said, after reading Tonys article on low speed running and your and Steves input I plan to take it to hit cruise RPMs at the end of each hull speed run.

    • 6BTA not spooling until other engine spools and takes resistance off

June 13, 2021 at 6:04 pm Hey guys, I have 6BTAs hooked to ZF220As. My starboard engine has given me some issues the last couple weekends. She wonā€™t get above 1600RPM under load. If I leave my port engine at idle and throttle the starboard she stops at 1600. No black smoke, no overheating, the turbo just never spools. When I am coming on to plane my port engine has to get to about 2000rpm and takes some of the resistance off the starboard, then she will slowly climb…

    • 1st time seawater impeller change

This topic has 7 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated byJulian 3 years ago

April 6, 2017 at 10:49 am Ā Newbie on the site with a still new to us boat. Ā This weekend I plan to change the seawater impeller on our 6BTA5.9 M3. Ā I understand the basic concepts but would appreciate any suggestions. I noticed that the bore of the new impeller is threaded on one end. Ā “Assuming” that the installed impeller is the same will a bolt to match those threads work as a puller? Thanks in advance for all replies.

May 5, 2021 at 7:08 pm Couple tips to add: If the keyway is at 12 o’clock when you pull the impeller, the key should stay in the pump housing and not fall out. You can turn the ignition key briefly and spin the pump until you get it facing the right direction. For pulling, snap-on part CJ83-3 (around $30) fits the threads and is an excellent puller. I used a hacksaw to cut the unthreaded 1/4″ section off right where the threads start so it can easily threa…

March 8, 2021 at 7:20 pm hi guys my first post of hopefully many šŸ™‚ I have a riviera 34ft with twin 6bt’s (210hp) – the boat is newish to me and i am in the process of going through it front to back. When i bought it the starboard engine would run warmer than port (noting port also runs the hot water service) at 2300rpm and above, my concern that it would run warmer but also gradually increase so i would back off to prevent overheating- At 2300 and above star…

March 10, 2021 at 5:04 pm Hi Tony thanks for the reply, the seawater pumps were replaced with new units (not cheap here in Australia!) in November 2020, since then they have done ~10-15 hours work. The thermostats were not replaced but were checked at the time and was advised they did not need replacement – for what they cost it may be worth putting a new one in starboard cheers

    • Coolant Drain Valve – 6BTA

This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byStephen Oliver 3 years ago

January 5, 2021 at 10:47 pm Hi Guys Has anyone changed out their coolant drain plug for a small ball valve and then a larger hose tail to a hose for draining easily and cleanly? I’m thinking of using a brass 1/8npt ball valve but unsure if it will take the temps and survive. Just thinking ahead as i’ll be replacing the alternator shortly and was thinking of doing the thermostat at the same time. SB engine is a pig to drain cleanly so i end up dumping it in the …

May 26, 2020 at 5:54 am 32 Holland put up for winter, ran perfectly. Launched over weekend and engine won’t go over 2100. Plenty of throttle left. Went to 3000 in fall. No prop change, no nothing changed. No smoke, runs smooth up to 2100. All filters new, no air restrictions. Ran with fuel from a can, ran without air cleaner. Have not adjusted aneroid yet, but not sure how much to turn star wheel for adjustment. Thinking maybe the shaft that operates diaphram …

July 22, 2020 at 6:10 pm I had the same issue with my 330. Replaced the sender to no avail. Ended up replacing the sender again with a genuine Faria sending unit, and replaced the blue wire from the sender to the gauge. Cured the problem.

June 23, 2020 at 2:53 pm I thought changing my transmission oil/filter was going to be an easy job, however I don’t appear to be able to get the ‘plug’ back into the hole in the transmission. Everything online I’ve seen says just place in hole but the o-ring won’t fit. Do you have to fit the filter to the ‘plug’ before putting into the hole? Why is there a tighten and loosen component to this? Does the ‘plug’ com…

October 22, 2019 at 5:16 pm I have had an intermittent issue with my starboard 6bta 330 engine. When the bottom of the boat is clean (right after a haul out) it reaches full rpm (2950-3000). After a month or so it won’t reach more than 2500. Feels like it is starving for fuel and not able to push the extra load of growth on the bottom. No issue with the port engine. I have vacuum gauges on the primary fuel filters. The port gauge stays around 2 in/hg. The starboard r…

November 6, 2019 at 5:57 pm To test it, at the dock with the starboard engine running, close the fuel valve between the primary filter and the tank and watch the gauge it should start to rise, open it before the engine sputters out.

August 6, 2019 at 5:31 pm My port engine has always taken longer to start than the starboard engine. It cranks fine but it usually takes two tries for it to start. I have taken the fuel shutoff solenoid apart and cleaned it as well as cut the ground wire from the harness and grounded it to the solenoid mounting bolt. Also I cleaned the connections on the mag switch/soienoid. Not sure where to go from here. anyone have any suggestions?

September 26, 2019 at 8:09 am The valve adjustment appears to have helped. Some valves were too tight and others too loose. I want to thank Tony and Rob for sticking with me and solving the problem. As always, great advice. I read through the forum often and always find some relevant information that I can use to make my life easier and keep my boat in good order. Don

May 21, 2019 at 8:50 am I am new to diesel marine engines but I know they are different than the truck engines I am accustomed to. I have a Maxum 4100 SCR with twin Cummins 6bta 5.9 M3 330’s.
