    • Cummins 6BT-5.9 (1988) Valve Adjust Question

January 22, 2020 at 7:55 am I reviewed the Cummins factory manual I have on this engine – preparing to do the first 1000 hours valve adjustment. Manual describes how to use the pin to establish TDC, but does not say anything about any need to insure TDC is at top of compression stroke or top of exhaust stroke. I know from past work on gas engines, this was critical – maybe I am over thinking this here. Cummins manual has diagrams to say which valves are adjust…

    • Is fresh water flushing worthwhile? 1 2 3

January 19, 2017 at 8:08 am Years ago, following Tony’s recommendation, I hooked up fresh water flush fittings to my engine’s strainer and started flushing religiously. Within less than a year I noticed that the engine zincs were holding up much better; in fact after three years they are still going strong. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but Iā€™ve tried multiple searches and cannot find the Tonyā€™s Tips article on fresh water flushing. Itā€™s referenced in the ā€œmarine ageā€ article but no link and I have had zero luck finding it. Are you looking for a “how-to” ? There is no such instruction as one size does not fit all. Many many variables with some of the key components being your seawa…

November 13, 2018 at 3:43 pm Greg my airsep was damaged pretty bad from someone pushing it down into the clamp.after repairing that hole it fixed most of the problem but probably was leaking a little from a crack.was going to do what you did but after talking to walker again I elected to buy a new one.i was also informed that the airsep we have has a finite life due to the baffling.now I don’t lose a drop of oil from the airsep.got a good deal thru west which could sp…

    • 6CTA Diamond Engine valve Adjustment

April 15, 2018 at 5:16 pm Purchased a 03 Sea Ray Sedan bridge with 500 hours on both engines. The manual says to adjust the valves at 500 hours. Currently they are running well and have 530 hours each. Has anyone completed the valve job themselves? I am a mechanic working on airplanes primarily and was hoping to find out what is required tool wise, parts, any special procedures, and appropriate valve clearances. Thank you, Gavin

April 16, 2018 at 5:39 am I also have a Sea Ray 400 with the 6c 8.3 so we are probably talking the same animal, but verify your clearances on the tag on the front cover (by the fuel pump) Intake .012 and exhaust .024. Adjustment is straight forward. No special tools that an aircraft mech won’t have. Metric wrenches, torque wrench, feeler gauges, hex keys. You should be able to reuse the valve cover gaskets, no need to buy any parts. The procedure is outlined in de…

    • 6BTA Source of Antifreeze Leak?

This topic has 8 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated byJohn 6 years ago

January 29, 2018 at 9:58 am Have a 6BTA 270hp engine in my 2006 Nordic Tug 32+. Boat is in Northern Rhode Island, winterized and on the hard for the Winter. We had below zero temperatures the first week of January, and a few more days through January. Three weeks ago, checking on the boat, I noticed a small amount of antifreeze, maybe a couple of tablespoons, under the Twin Disc transmission. Check around engine. Couldnā€™t see any obvious source of leak. Wiped area dry. Yes…

April 2, 2018 at 8:10 am Update… after removing cap on expansion tank and removing a little antifreeze, no additional leaking. I’ll assume freeze/thaw cycle caused pressure and forced some antifreeze out of hoses somewhere. Once in the water, I’ll watch it. Will check hoses and clamps more often, and release expansion tank cap next Fall as we go into Winter storage.

March 19, 2017 at 3:18 pm A friend of mine has 5.9 B mechanicals in his boat. Ā 13 months ago, he had a port side turbo rebuilt. Ā This weekend, he took the boat out, and the port side turbo would not spin up, was frozen. Ā I suggested to him that he has an exhaust design issue, but he was confident his exhaust is sound. Ā He blamed the issue on not using the boat much more frequently than once per month. Having just replaced two turbo’s on my 8,3 C Mechanicals, his is…

May 13, 2017 at 10:32 am My opinion on the genset is yes, it is a good idea as long as you put a good load on it (run A/C, water heater, etc.) so she comes up to thermostat opening temperature. Ā  Let her run awhile (20-30 min) at normal operating temperature, then take the load off and let her cool down a bit before shutdown.
