April 24, 2021 at 8:38 am Not sure, but a 1/4″ one or or the other does not really matter.. If both “fit” , it should not really matter.

    • Flushing engine

August 31, 2020 at 10:34 am 6 CTA Cummings – I flushed my engine a few weeks ago with barnacle buster. Last weekend I wanted to take a peak inside the heat exchanger and replace the end cap gaskets. It was pretty clean but my assumption was that the heat exchanger always has water in it. Since it doesn’t, what’s the best way (without removing the heat exchanger) to flush it if barnacle buster isn’t actually staying inside the heat exchanger?

August 31, 2020 at 12:26 pm Disconnect hose off your raw water pump, and also your hose exiting the heat exchanger. Rig a temporary hose and circulating pump between those two lines with a bucket of barnacle buster or ryde lyme or whatever plumbed into the loop, and circulate the goodies in the system for several hours.

    • Dripless shaft turning in current

May 16, 2019 at 1:46 pm Launched my boat yesterday with no issues. A few hours later, the current in my river was at mid-tide and flows extremely fast. I was in the engine room and the starboard shaft started rotating and then eventually the port shaft. Boat is a 2005 Luhrs 36 open with twin cummins 6c 8.3’s with hydraulic transmissions and dripless shaft seals. This is the the third year with the boat and I do not recall the shafts ever turning in current. Mind …

July 17, 2019 at 6:32 am Rob, Dave’s boat and mine are docked on the Merrimack River, Newburyport/Salisbury Mass. Dave, I have a PSS shaft seal. Prop shaft spins with the tide in my boat. No issues with the shaft seal. I was towed in on July 3rd, shaft must have been spinning a good 8 knots on the tow in with out going tide. I felt the shaft seal with my hand from time to time being towed. No issue with heat with the tow in. Since then, engine fuel leak fixed, 5-6…

    • Cummins 6c oil pressure

May 29, 2018 at 11:33 am Hello, 2004 Cummins 6c 8.3 engines in boat. I was curious what the oil pressure range should be at idle and how it should fluctuate during running and if there is a way to test the sending unit before I potentially replace that? Thank you

May 29, 2018 at 6:00 pm The oil pressure you “see” on the gauge at the panel may or may be the actual OIL PRESSURE in the main oil gallery or the OP going into the oil filter. Between the sender wearing out over time or the gauge “sticking”, use that gauge as a base indicator only.. To your question: Seeing 40-80 PSI at medium to high RPM’s seems average and 10-20 PSI when idling (engine hot) is normal. going below an actual 10 PSI when…

    • Oil accumulation in air filter

April 2, 2018 at 1:57 pm Hello, I have two 6c8.3 Cummins engines in my boat (boat is a 2005). Boat was new to us last year. I started to notice some small amounts of oil accumulation in the air filters during the summer. I don’t have a ton of history on the boat maintenance wise, but the oil samples at survey came back good and the boat runs very well with no issues. I came across this article which seems to describe issues with the B series engine, but I was tryi…

April 18, 2018 at 10:41 am Tony, we purchased this boat last winter from a person in Connecticut who only owned it one season. We don’t have a ton of history on it maintenance wise, but my broker knows the previous owner before the CT owner and we were told he took good care of the boat and that money was never an issue. I am in the process of trying to track down some maintenance records. I have a Cummins certified mechanic going through it in the next few weeks an…

February 8, 2018 at 11:56 am I have a 38 foot Luhrs with twin cummins 6c8.3 motors built in 2004. It’s our first big boat purchased in November of 2016 and clearly I have a lot to learn. It was winterized at the yard we bought it from in Connecticut last December before we brought it up to Massachusetts in the spring. When they put it away for the winter I was told there were battery and charger issues that they would revisit in the spring. So, in the spring they ins…

February 26, 2018 at 1:48 pm Batteries were holding 12.6 and 12.5 volts after resting a day and load testing well on two different load testers (an electronic one and the old school toggle switch toaster). I am getting pretty high amp readings from wires on my 3 electric float switches. The company told me they cycle every 2.5 minutes to check for water but only for one second at a time and will use less than 1 amp per day total doing that.
