March 22, 2019 at 8:32 pm I have just experienced the exhaust system breakdown problem on the Cummins QSM 11 670 hp including an engine fire. My just purchased Bayliner 2002 5788 has been over propped since new and has been run by its owner that way for 3900 hrs. First time out with the boat I had a starboard engine fire due to the deterioration of the exhaust system and blown exhaust gaskets. Propping these engines correctly is so important !!! I have just had the ex…

April 2, 2019 at 7:09 pm Hi Tony- Yes, I totally agree that a lot of mechanics and owners of QSM 11 engines do not understand any of this….the last owner and his mechanic that maintained these engines since new in 2002 had no idea….3900 hrs with no maintenance on the exhaust system or coolers and heat exchangers…. I did post the RPM/fuel burn on this boat from the sea trial on this forum and we all agreed that the boat was over propped. In the mean tim…

    • QSM11 RPM/Fuel Burn Test

November 6, 2018 at 5:48 pm Been looking at a 2002 Bayliner 5788 with twin QSM11 Cummins with 3900 hrs on them. Was able to get the boat out yesterday and did the RPM/Fuel Burn Test. In a previous post, I was concerned with 7 & 10 ppm of Chromium in the 250 hr oil in these engines and with no other negative engine symptoms….seems like most people are not concerned. Just changed the oil and filters in both engines, ran the boat at various RPM’s for 1.5 hrs a…

February 27, 2019 at 10:20 am I have read your superb articles on the zen of QSM-11 engines, and based on the “Propping the Cummins Marine QSM11 to Prevent Exhaust Issues” article, am about to haul my new (to me) boat to have it re-propped to prevent dry exhaust/turbo issues as you advise. I just ran the boat yesterday to collect the data and build my fuel burn curve. The file is attached with the line graph and table of the data I collected. (The table figur…

    • Servicing Aftercoolers on QSM11 Cummins

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byLarry Backman 5 years ago

November 11, 2018 at 9:05 pm I am looking at a 2002 Bayliner 5788 with twin QSM11 Cummins engines with 3,900 hrs on them. Just finding out that the aftercoolers have never been serviced, the owner says the engines run cool and there are no leaks. What is the recommended service interval for these coolers and what kind of shape do you think they are in now with 3900 hrs of salt water use in the Pacific NW. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers,

November 12, 2018 at 5:25 am Iā€™m on a religious 3 year interval for the entire set of 4 coolers. I would expect the worst on all your coolers if they havenā€™t been serviced in all those hours and assume you will minimally have to replace the AC if not all 4 of them I picked up a boat with 600 hrs on the engine over 8 years and when we went to service the coolers found corrosion had almost destroyed both the AC and the HX. Tony saved them, but the AC lost a bunch of fin mat…

    • Overhaul Cost of a QSM11

October 27, 2018 at 6:14 pm Any idea about what it would cost to overhaul a QSM11 in place…a pair are in a Bayliner 5788 and both have 3900 hrs and high chromium content from the survey oil tests. I know the costs can vary alot based on the condition of all the accessories, but, just trying to get an idea what a person is looking at. Thanks for your ideas.

October 23, 2018 at 5:40 pm I am looking at purchasing a 2002 Bayliner with Cummins QSM11 engines with 3900 hrs on them. During the inspection, I had engine oil samples taken which have just over 250 hrs since last oil change. The oil used in the engines is Delo 400LE SAE 15W40. The Chromium on the port engine came in at 7 ppm and the starboard engine 10 ppm, the report says all other levels were normal I have attached the reports and looking for any input and suggestions.

October 18, 2018 at 10:06 am Thanks Tony. I do not have boost gauges so will need to install them. I do know that at the 3000 rpm range, my EGT is around 840 degrees. Boat is now out of the water for the season but that will be done next spring.
