    • ZF 280A Trolling Valve adjustment? 1 2

This topic has 27 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byScott A 1 year ago

August 16, 2017 at 6:47 pm Have a ZF 280A with trolling valve that is operated by the standard t handle push pull cable. I do salmon trolling on Lake Michigan with the boat which is a 36 Tiara with C series Cummins. I can dead stop the boat with the control and get to about 1.8 knots easy with it, but no matter how easy or patient I am with the cable/control I canĀ“t get much more speed out of it without it making a gear grinding noise or jumping out of troll mode. I guess…

April 26, 2023 at 10:23 am Trolling valves are certainly tricky little buggers.Ā  “can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em”Ā  Only one I have had that was easy to use was on a 24 foot Topaz with a gas motor.Ā  When we ran old Shamrocks with gas carburetors, we used to just get in there with a screw driver and dial the engine back such that it would die if you pulled the throttle all the way back.Ā  We adjusted the gear with the idle spe…

    • 6BT5.9M excessive cranking

This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 6 years ago

November 2, 2017 at 3:58 am My port 1988 vintage 6BT5.9M has an intermittent starting problem. On occasion I find myself cranking for 20 – 30 sec. and after 2 or 3 or …cycles it may start. I will get the marina tech. to get into this next spring ….. ( fuel and filters are new and clean ) but what are the risks of this excessive cranking with the ” raw water sea cocks OPEN ? I read somewhere that water could get into the engine .. ??? Thank you …

    • Cummins QSC 8.3 L 1 2

October 16, 2017 at 4:18 pm I have a Cummins QSC 8.3 L engine which was purchased with a new boat in May 2016. All Cummins recommended maintenance was performed by an authorized Cummins dealer in April 2017 with 214 Hours on the engine. Yesterday I took the boat out and as soon as put power to the engine it was sluggish and billowing black smoke from the exhaust. The engine has 281 hours on it currently. I found a 12 inch crack in the aftercooler housing causing a sign…

November 28, 2017 at 2:58 pm Mark Half the battle has been won in that you now know how to service your engine! And that knowledge will give you many many hours and years of solid Cummins life. Service those aftercoolers and go boating. And for giggles you can do some oil samples and watch the sodium and wear metals decline. As to convincing Cummins otherwise, don’t bother – “Couch Engineer”, “Head in the sand”, whatever you want to call …

    • Cummins b or not

September 13, 2017 at 7:37 am Engines are in a Bayliner 3870 which is a 1000 miles away and I am trying to decide if I want to make an offer, fly up there, sea trial and survey. Listed as 1988 250hp Cummins. Unfortunately the boat is 17,000 displacement dry and I want to run 20 knots. The Hino was the favorite engine for them up to 220hp, but with the 250 hp thought I might be able to run 20 knots. To do so however would probably have to run 2200 at least, and maybe up to 24…

September 16, 2017 at 6:27 pm I have already given up on the boat, but Mr. Athens confirms by reasons for my decision. I want to make use of the available power that is in a later model 250hp and have decided for this boat model really need the 315 or more hp engines. Thanks

    • Belt rotor bearing 3970139

August 1, 2017 at 2:49 am The bearing on the starboard engine decided to give way. The original bearings from Cummins cost $176 per piece and there are those available for Dodge costing about $50. Are the 2 bearings of the same quality? Is it super critical to replace it with original parts? From reliability stand point. Secondly, since the starboard bearing is busted, should the port be replaced at the same time? Is there some kind of life span? Thanks James

    • Oil sample results not good

This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

July 24, 2017 at 12:19 pm I’ve got a purchase and sale agreement on a boat powered by 2001 Cummins 6CTA8.3-M3 with 850hrs serial #’s 4664812 and 46050752. Both engines start easily, smoke very little at all rpm’s and reach 2650 rpm WOT. I know they are propped a little heavy, but I will correct that. The boat has mostly been cruised at under 2000 rpm by the preset owner. My problem is that the oil samples came back within specs except for the aluminum l…

July 26, 2017 at 5:32 am We are jumping ahead a bit here but it’s nice to know what you could be facing regarding the aftercoolers: If replacement is needed the entire unit pricing is a bit more than Philip posted but if the cores are good the housings are also available without the cores. I included both links above. If I were in your shoes with this purchase and the boat itself “checked all of my boxes” then I would go thru the bullet points that P…

    • QSB5.9 shows intermittant fuel pump fault

July 18, 2017 at 5:05 pm 44′ Tollycraft. We removed the original BTA5.9 M2 engines and replaced with two QSB5.9 380 HO, ZF gears, and Smartcraft instruments. We reused the ZF/Mathers controls and added a 7″ display on the flybridge and two 4″ displays at the lower station. The alternators are now controlled by Balmar regulators, with the stbd engine charging the 1150 cca start battery and the port alternator charging the house bank. The port engine fu…

July 24, 2017 at 10:49 am Unless you have already eliminated this as a potential problem, I would recommend trying to disconect the Balmar controller on the alternator to see if that makes the problem go away.

    • QSB6.7 HE and AC Maintenance

This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byChris Dahl 7 years ago

December 12, 2016 at 9:38 am QSB6.7 480HP-TurnedĀ 3 years/600 hours on my engine just before hauling for winter and thought might as well hit the cooling system for a checkup. The aftercooler weeped a few drips per hour from factory so it was pulled apart and greased up early on, nothing done to the HE. Notes below on findings: -AC came right apart, could push the core out with a couple thumbs, couple feathers, small eel grass, and a few evergreen needles piled up, not bad. …

December 15, 2016 at 9:36 am 10-4, have a Buck Alonquin screen unit coming for the hull side. I’ll keep the inside of the boat just as is, I like the Vetus for ease of dockwater engine flushing. Hopefully get the HE and AC greased and back together this weekend.
