    • ZF 280A Trolling Valve adjustment? 1 2

August 16, 2017 at 6:47 pm Have a ZF 280A with trolling valve that is operated by the standard t handle push pull cable. I do salmon trolling on Lake Michigan with the boat which is a 36 Tiara with C series Cummins. I can dead stop the boat with the control and get to about 1.8 knots easy with it, but no matter how easy or patient I am with the cable/control I canĀ“t get much more speed out of it without it making a gear grinding noise or jumping out of troll mode. I guess…

April 26, 2023 at 10:23 am Trolling valves are certainly tricky little buggers.Ā  “can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em”Ā  Only one I have had that was easy to use was on a 24 foot Topaz with a gas motor.Ā  When we ran old Shamrocks with gas carburetors, we used to just get in there with a screw driver and dial the engine back such that it would die if you pulled the throttle all the way back.Ā  We adjusted the gear with the idle spe…

March 5, 2019 at 12:50 pm Doing a bunch of various maintenance on my CTA CPL 1929’s. Going to be draining most of anti freeze so just going to replace with new 50/50 mix. What would be best coolant filter number to replace with at same time?

October 27, 2018 at 10:05 am Good /strong base engine with a very complex Yanmar aftercooler/cooling system.. If it was a saltwater boat, I would walk as the parts in the cooling system are crazy $$.. If I remember correctly, the engine has like 12 zincs and all are proprietary Yanmar? Dry turbo (don’y really like that like) and the seawater pump drive has had issues to where the most of the front of the engine needs to tore down to get to it. I know of 2 of these t…

    • Convert Aftercoolers

March 11, 2018 at 2:07 pm Been trying to research the topic. Is is possible or even Ok to convert my raw water cooled aftercoolers to fresh water cooled? Or I have been thinking about possibilities of a bypass valve for long periods of trolling at idle speeds? My thoughts is our 45-55 average deg water is cooling down the non boosted air going into my intake while at idle speeds for 10-12 hours a day and if I could keep that temp up it would help with a cleaner burn at i…

March 29, 2018 at 6:41 am May be easier to just by-pass the raw water around the cooler when when running at low speeds.. Until you are making at least 150HP ( 7-8 GPH) you do not even have to think about aftercooling with this engine. If running at 100 HP or less ( 5 gph), you could just bypass the air and let the engine run as a “non-turboed” engine. You would notice a nice difference as to how the engine runs doing either of those. Tony
